F2F 3: Who's Bringing the Guacamole?
Plan what to do, what to wear (you can never go wrong with a corset), and get ready for the next BuffistaCon: San Francisco, May 19-21, 2006! Everything else, go here! Swag!
Airfare rises with the price of oil, so I'm not surprised that good deals are hard to find these days.
I use Travelocity. (The prices are the same as Orbitz/Expedia, but I prefer their interface, and since I use them for everything, I get a few Preferred Member perks, like discounts on car rentals and some hotels.)
Does JetBlue have a flight you guys can use? They won't help me when I'm staying on the same coast, but they were awesome when I flew San Diego to NYC.
I am flying JetBlue, and my ticket is over $300.
[eta: That's with taxes/fees]
I'm using Southwest this time out, something like $160 with taxes (from a much closer start obviously). I was looking at what they've got in the midwest. They fly out of Chicago (Midway) if that helps anyone, since they've got some decent fare sales going on.
Yes, indeed, Fred Pete, that's where I'm at. Yeah, Van Gelder runs a bus that I could take, and it would save me around $40 in airfare, but I hate carting luggage around on a bus. It's more hassle than I want to handle. If I was 20 and full of vim and vigor, I'd probably consider it. Nowadays, I'm all about comfort.

Make sure you keep an eye on their sales. I think our flights to NYC were originally around $250 (2 yrs ago), but when they had a sale (like $50 off) I got a credit for the price difference.
Van Gelder. That's them.
And I see your point about comfort. Last time I took that bus was for my brother's wedding. I was 26.
If you're near a city that Southwest flies to, keep an eye on their weekly specials. They have an email list for it. Also, it's usually cheaper to fly into Oakland than to fly into SFO. And I find it a hell of a lot less stressful. BART doesn't go directly to OAK but it's a pretty easy switch. You just buy an AirBART ticket inside the airport and hop on a shuttle that takes you to the Coliseum BART station. Then you can go anywhere BART goes. (There are also standard AC Transit buses that go from the airport to the BART station but I don't know the line numbers offhand.) OAK is a smaller airport and thus easier to get in and out of than SFO. But I'm basing this on pre-BART days at SFO. I have no idea how much easier/less stressful it is now that BART goes directly to the airport at SFO.
But the point of this whole post was just to say it's often cheaper to fly into OAK. So check it both ways.

Yep. I'm flying from Midway to Oakland (on Southwest) for $245 roundtrip.
Epic, let me know about Prom night!
The SFO-BART connection is pretty smooth - if BART is running without problems. I happened to hit it on the WRONG day and it took me longer to get home on BART than the whole airport process of getting from Boise to SFO. But, seriously, BART is a great option from either SFO or OAK.
If you want to avoid that - just give a shout out when you need a ride and there are plenty of locals who have offered personal shuttle services, including yours truly.

I saw that and even considered it for a brief moment, but I'm staying Monday night with Perkins and there's no way it would be easy for me to get to Oakland on Tuesday without extreme hassle (and the damn train ride under the Bay, nuh and uh) and inconvenience. As I said, I am all about comfort, for me and those around me. SFO is a better option for me, phobia-wise and logistically. I'm willing to pay the extra $50 to fly MSN to SFO.
