Tommyrot, that is definitely one of the problems, but the Task Manager doesn't show Firefox running. The process manager says Firefox is running but can't close it.
I'm pretty much at a loss. And very grumpy: I HATE IE.

Sorry, I was thinking of the process manager. That's odd that the process manager can't kill Firefox.
Gah, can't think of anything else....
I've had the update running for a day or two, and it's working fine for me. I'm wondering if it's so incompatible with one of your extensions that it's just crashing.
A default profile is created for you the first time you start up Firefox.
Yeah, but I have seen Firefox refuse to load even the default profile on occasion, steadfastly asking if you'd like to create a new default profile, which when you attempt to do it, Firefox says you already have one, and it again asks if you'd like to create one. That can usually be fixed by rebooting the machine.

I hope that I rebooted often enough that it was the only choice. Otherwise I lost everything because I was impatient. Which is kinda poetic, but I miss my bookmarks.
Cass, sweetie, what are you doing up at this ungodly hour?
Firefox won't delete your old profile, so you can retrieve your bookmarks. If you're in XP, the profiles are usually stored in c:\documents and settings\[username]\application data\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles
The profile name is a bunch of random seeming characters. If you open it, you'll find a file called bookmarks.html. You can just copy this file from the old profile to the new, and your old bookmarks will be restored. (Firefox must be closed when you do this.)
Cass, sweetie, what are you doing up at this ungodly hour?Getting my old bookmarks back, apparently. Thanks!
Actually that will be later. After I go back to sleep for a while.
Why does Firefox make this so crazy and difficult?
I updated Firefox on two machines and I have had no problems.
Here's the thing...I'm wondering if your Virus software is interacting with Firefox. Can you reboot your machine, shut down the virus software and firewall and then try to open firefox?
BTW, you might need to go into Program Files and look around and move Firefox related files to a different folder.
Okay, I've uninstalled Firefox and uninstalled Microsoft Anti-Spyware (I've heard twice recently that it is incompatible with some things). I exported my Bookmarks and saved the file, and then deleted the Mozilla program folder. I also deleted the Mozilla folder from Local Settings.
Now I'm going to reinstall Firefox again.
Did you get Firefox working again?
I did! I ended up turning off the Norton Security firewall (I already have ZoneAlarm's firewall going) and that seemed to do the trick.
I would dearly love to know why they suddenly decided to be incompatible, but.
Still, I'm glad I'm at least halfway tech-savvy; because if I were not, I've have given up completely and gone back to IE.
Now I just have to reinstall my extensions. I understand Session Saver has problems and there's a newer extension that's better...
