A default profile is created for you the first time you start up Firefox. Here's some info on managing profiles.

Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Argh. I just spent over an hour digging through the Mozilla help files, uninstalled, reinstalled, set up a new profile, etc etc etc.
Nothing. Something to do with the new updates has fucked it up.
Welll, then I am not updateing. I'll ask Matt about it later.
Consuela, are you using Windows? Does rebooting fix the problem (at least temporarily)? If so, it could be that Firefox is not closing down correctly, and still has a process open even though you have all its windows closed. Use the Task Manager to see if there are any errant Firefox processes....
Tommyrot, that is definitely one of the problems, but the Task Manager doesn't show Firefox running. The process manager says Firefox is running but can't close it.
I'm pretty much at a loss. And very grumpy: I HATE IE.
Sorry, I was thinking of the process manager. That's odd that the process manager can't kill Firefox.
Gah, can't think of anything else....
I've had the update running for a day or two, and it's working fine for me. I'm wondering if it's so incompatible with one of your extensions that it's just crashing.

Yeah, but I have seen Firefox refuse to load even the default profile on occasion, steadfastly asking if you'd like to create a new default profile, which when you attempt to do it, Firefox says you already have one, and it again asks if you'd like to create one. That can usually be fixed by rebooting the machine.

I hope that I rebooted often enough that it was the only choice. Otherwise I lost everything because I was impatient. Which is kinda poetic, but I miss my bookmarks.
Cass, sweetie, what are you doing up at this ungodly hour?
Firefox won't delete your old profile, so you can retrieve your bookmarks. If you're in XP, the profiles are usually stored in c:\documents and settings\[username]\application data\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles
The profile name is a bunch of random seeming characters. If you open it, you'll find a file called bookmarks.html. You can just copy this file from the old profile to the new, and your old bookmarks will be restored. (Firefox must be closed when you do this.)
Cass, sweetie, what are you doing up at this ungodly hour?Getting my old bookmarks back, apparently. Thanks!
Actually that will be later. After I go back to sleep for a while.
Why does Firefox make this so crazy and difficult?
