Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
I think a .bin can be opened with Stuffit. Have you tried deleting the ".uncompressed" bit from the extension?
Yep, at which point Stuffit says "This file is not compressed," and possibly mutters something about me not smoking so much crack under its breath.
Use something other than MSN messenger? There must be a Mac equivalent to Trillian, right?
I guess this is a possibility, but I'm not so familiar with what my options might be, plus this would possibly involve doing things that make it more obvious that I am doing not-work-related stuff. Opening Messenger has the advantage of being slightly more stealthy.
Google Talk is the stealthiest, since it opens right in Gmail, but it only works for other people with Gmail.
I don't think Google Talk works with Safari though. At least it wasn't on my Dad's computer.
It's possible to get iChat (and presumably Adium) to communicate with Google Talk, since they all speak Jabber.

iChat only works with Google Talk in Tiger.
Oh, I suppose I should mention the other reason I was trying to use MSN Messenger was to speak to a friend who is only on Messenger.
Can iChat talk to people on Messenger?
I don't think so, no. Is this the page that's giving you the frelled up bin file?

I think you meant Google Chat, which works between browsers signed on to Gmail.
Google Talk is a separate application. I never could get it to work with my old systems.

It was still calling itself Google Talk when it first popped up as a new feature, but that may be because my office computer is in the UK. (At work, I have "Google Mail," and not "Gmail" because there was a licensing snafu with the name a couple months back.)
[eta: Yeah, on the front page, the logo is still saying "Google Mail + Talk"]
