Okay, this is interesting. The family of a Marine killed in Iraq wants to read all his email. Yahoo said no.
I feel for the family, but in the absence of any indication otherwise by the deceased, I tend to agree with Yahoo.

when i came back from my sick leave, my computer's sound no longer worked. what could have caused this? is it something i can fix without waiting on our worthless IT guys to bring me a new sound card?
You infected it! hee.
What version of Windows is it, and do you have any access to things like the sound controls and device manager?
You infected it! hee.
did not. *sniff*

XP Pro, yes and yes.
Microsoft actually has a page with a link to their sound troubleshooter, it's worth a shot. [link]
I was thinking maybe removing the sound card from the device manager and reboot, let XP find it again. (making note, of course, of what sound card is listed.)
Have you already checked the advanced sound properties?
I do not agree with Yahoo's decision and I would sue them. I might not win, but I'd sue them anyway.
it's saying i have no audio device. stoopid computer. sounds like the soundcard is fried.

Oh god, I don't want my family getting access to my email accounts if I die! What's after that, my buffista ID? My LJ? Hell, no. Let it decay like the ephemera (profane, insulting and plain evil) that it is.
I'm with JSw. There might be stuff in that email that he doesn't want his parents to know about.
I agree with Yahoo.
I can't imagine wanting anyone in my family's stuff, and I certainly don't want them in mine.
You know what? If I'm dead, they can have at me. Who cares? I'm dead!
There might be reason to have access to email though...some financial statements come via that means and no other and if you have to reconcile an 'estate' there may be good reason.
Forums and LJ - I can't see any reason to have access to those after a person dies.
