I've had decent luck with Gentoo, although it's been a while since my last clean install and I don't ask it to do too much other than occasional platform testing and holding a cvs repository.
If you're interested in tinkering under the hood, it may be a good distro for you. It's extremely customizable.
Hey, Ubuntu made the The 100 Best Products of 2005 from PC World.
Any CSS experts out there who want to help me figure out a problem with a dropdown menu? I've banged my head on the desk one too many times and I've decided to yell for help.
Hey cool. I might have to try Gentoo and/or Slackware just to see what they are like. I can't belive I forgot about Slackware, I used Slackware a lot back in the day when I had a couple of Linux servers on the web.
Of course then there's the whole Xfce vs. KDE vs. GNOME issue. So far I'm liking GNOME the best, but Xfce isn't too bad either. I haven't warmed up to KDE.
Gentoo was my favorite, but it's very very much for somebody who likes complete control.
Ubuntu is beautifully done, and much easier to use than Gentoo, without quite as much customizability. I like the debian packaging system a lot more than RPMs - if you could handle RPMs, you can probably handle debs.
I hate each of KDE, Gnome, and XFCE, and always ran primarily GTK+ programs on top of a simple window manager like fluxbox for my own self. But I'm a minimalist - I didn't even set the fluxbox menus and used shortcut keys to start all of my programs (or a terminal window). I'm sure Gnome has improved since I last used it, though, it's been years and years.
In other news: I remember a bunch of announcements about (bad?) changes in PalmOne not long ago. Does this mean I should not get a Treo 650 refurbished for $140 with 2-year contract? The idea of a PDA attached to my phone so I actually take it with me and use it is a very nice one, especially as my life gets ever-more complicated post-college, and they seem the best. If the Palm is a bad idea for business reasons, though, I may go for the not-as-optimal Blackberry 7290 instead...
I think the Palm thing, at least on the surface, is ironed out -- the article of doom was retracted.
I just noticed that Jasc PSP is now Corel PSP. Which is fine. However Corel's positioning it
very
much like a photoeditor, to the point of selling camera accessories with it. Anyone know how much it may have changed since 8, which is the version I own?
I'm also googling to find out.
Cool. Treo ordered. Heck, for $140 and renewing a contract on a number I've had for 7 years and don't see getting rid of anytime soon is a serious steal.
