Ok, I've got a stumper.
Background: I'm going home in a few days, and, as my parents live out in the boonies, the Internet comes via satellite, which uses a modem which interfaces with the computer through USB.
Question: Any ideas on a router or set-up that will allow more than one computer on the Internet at the same time? Everything I'm finding on the web is only kinda making sense, and I'm not sure it's talking to me, anyway.
Debet, are you looking to hook the computers up wirelessly? It sounds like plugging a WiFi router into the satellite modem and a USB WiFi adapter into your parent's computer should work. Then you can use other Wifi adapters to hook other computers up.
You'll need to tweak a bunch of settings though.
Wirelessly or not-wirelessly, what you need is a router. The basic setup should be pretty much the same whether it's satellite, cable, DSL, etc:
OUTSIDE WORLD -> MODEM -> ROUTER -> COMPUTERS
If you're looking at wireless, the router should have both a wireless antenna thingy and a bunch of ports for wired connections, so you may not need wireless cards for all of them.
The problem with using a Internet sharing router is that every two-way satellite Internet provider I've ever heard of uses proprietary drivers for their modem. I doubt most routers can talk to such a modem.
That said, you don't need a router at all. Just turn on the Internet sharing feature of the computer hooked up to the satellite and then use wired or wireless networking to connect the rest of the computers in the house.
Thanks Ginger!
Some are POP, some are web...it's a [phonetic spelling here] mishagoss.
I've done the Outlook dealie, and even routed one domain under my control. The other two don't seem to be working though. More research required.
The USB is the only way the Modem will talk to anything, otherwise I'd use the router I have from my apartment.
Rob's may be the best solution. I'll play with it when I get there.
Thanks.
If you are expecting to share by wire, make sure you bring an extra ethernet card, in case their computer doesn't have one.
signed,
t been there.
Yes, I am.
And unrepentantly so.
What's the what in PDA technology these days? Is convergence the theme of the market? Do you need a phone or a camera to be up to date?

ND's latest PDA is also a phone and a camera.
Or, his latest phone is also a camera and a PDA.
Or.... Well, you get the idea.
