"Faded like the lilac, he thought."

Huh. That's very interesting. I've been wondering what it will mean to me, and the directv site has been less than forthcoming.

The other interesting bit is where most of their revenue stream comes from their direct subscribers, so the numbers about distribution may be a bit deceptive as to how it affects them. This makes sense to me, because I think I pay less for my subscription than direct subscribers; in fact, I think I pay only a few cents over what it would cost me just to have the extra receiver alone. So Tivo can't be seeing very much dosh off me.

Hmm - a friends computer needs OS reinstalled. (Windows XP-Pro). Warranty has expired. Dell refuses to sell disk for just price of the disk. Insists on buying full copy. If we have to do that Circuit city has it for same price. But if they sold you the computer and thus know the license is valid shouldn't they sell you the disk for around the same $10 cost you can get it with a new computer?

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Every Dell we've bought came with a reinstall disk, which is a full copy of XP Pro. Tell your friend to check the box with all the manuals in it that comes with the machine.

eta: It will have a Dell label, and say something like "reinstall." The Windows XP part will be in small print.

The generation that could change the world is still looking for its car keys.

Or call Dell and say you lost it.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

ita,

I transferred some video files to the Tivo and they all skipped. So I think the main reason for using the file transfer feature are for files that were on the Tivo and you backed them up elsewhere.

So I think I'm just going to burn to DVD non Tivo files.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

The converted files -- do they skip when you play them on your PC?

That's a bummer.

"And to be clear, I am the hell. And the high water."

ita, I haven't tried that yet. The Tivo files I copied back worked just fine.

Art Crawl!!!

I woke up this morning, turned on my tv and the picture has gone all narrow . . . like you're watching a wide-screen movie only to the Extreme. Is my tv doomed? Or can I find a control that would correct this? And if so, what might it be called?

(I seem to remember having a control for something like this on one of my former tvs -- I just have no clue where it might be on this one.)

Your tag here.

On my remote, it's called "Pic Size". You might also look for something called Aspect Ratio. Do you have cats? You might try them to see if they know.

Art Crawl!!!

If controls were switched -- the cats must have done it in the middle of the night.
