Got a question about technology? Ask it here. Discussion of hardware, software, TiVos, multi-region DVDs, Windows, Macs, LINUX, hand-helds, iPods, anything tech related. Better than any helpdesk!
Gmail apparently open to everyone now.
I can't see the supposed "Sign up for Gmail!" thingy on the front page, but that might be because Google thinks I'm in the UK. (And my Gmail account still says "Gmail Beta" in the logo, but maybe they just haven't gotten around to changing that yet?)
Looks like new GMail accounts are only available for people with cell phones that can receive a text message: [link]
"Just go to gmail.com." From there, you can get an invitation code sent to your mobile phone, and with this code, you can create a Gmail account

And you have to be a US resident.
But the invitations still work, and those work anywhere, sans cell. (And everyone with a Gmail account currently has 50, so...)
domain reg question -- is it possible to register a domain name to an organization rather than a person? I'm having to hunt down a registrant who hasn't been involved in the group for the last 5 years in order to move my group's site to a new host, and I'd love it if 5 years from now when I've burned out and moved on, a note on board letterhead will do the trick for the next webmaster so they don't have to find someone who still remembers where to hunt me down....
(oh, yeah, and the org is a duly registered 501 c 3 yadda yadda, which I suspect could make a difference)
Tech support question -- I'm looking at my Add/Remove Programs panel, and there's a bunch of Java stuff on there that looks repetitive. Do I need all of these?
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 2
- J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
- Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
- Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
# Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
# Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_06
Yeah, v1.4.2_03 is repetitive. Can't be certain about the J2SEs. Personally, I'd uninstall the lot and reinstall the newest Java from www.sun.com, check for updates and it'd be good.
Edit: Here's the java download page. Strange they seem to have jumped from 1.4.2 to 5.0. I'm not seeing anything immediately obvious as to why on their site.

Yes.

That covers my caveat. At least with Network Solutions (only registrar I have experience with), you'll have to prove the legitamacy of an organization (i.e. provide letters of incorporation, etc.) and you'll have to sign an affidavit stating you have the authority to act on behalf of that organization. It can be quite frustrating if you don't have all your Is crossed and Ts dotted.
As far as transferring power, I'd provide a general administrator email address as the Administrative and Technical contact. Your successor could then be provided access to that email account which will help them answer questions sent by the registrar to the address they have on record. You'll also want to share registrar account usernames and passwords and answers to secret questions.
For God's sake, don't use Network Solutions. They are eviler than the evilest evil thing that's evil. If you ever want to leave them, they will make you jump through fifty hoops and it will take months.
