I have empirically determined that "finalizing" is necessary to play back DVD-Rs on anything other thasn the recorder they are recorded on. At least, not finalizing leads to my laptop spitting the DVD back out immediately. I am not quite ready to try finalizing again since last time my DVD turned into a coaster.

Find a cafe or public library that has WiFi.
ah...So I'd have to leave my house.
Apple didn't mention that a bad antenna could be a problem. If they had I could have brought the laptop plus the airport into their stupid store when I was there last weekend. grrrrrrr.

It seems pretty unlikely to me. Repair places tend to only look at the likely causes to problems first.
Wait, did you install the airport card? If so, did you connect the antenna wire to the airport card?

Yes.
Jon, folk here (Jessica?) have recommended GoDaddy too.
You might also see if you can get someone who has a WiFi laptop to see if they can connect OK to your network (or borrow one).
Anyway, the idea is to narrow down the number things that could be wrong.
How strong of a signal does your laptop say you're getting? There are also programs that will tell you both the signal strength and the strength of any interference, which would be good to know.
Thanks ita & dcp.

ah that's a good idea.

Do you know where I could get these?

I have one, but I forget what it's called and I don't have my iBook with me. When I got a sec. I'll try to see if I can find it....
But you should be able to see a general connection strength right now (taking into account both signal strength and interference, and combining them into one value) by the little signal icon at the top of the screen. There's another place that has this if that icon isn't there, but I forget where it is....

Oh yes I know of this icon. I'm not home with the computer in question right now but the icon shows no strength (and the drop-down menu from it does not show my network) unless I'm right near the airport. Then it shows a couple of bars. (Thanks for your help, by the way. This stuff makes me feel like one of those people who doesn't know how to, say, attach a file to an email message.)
