Beej, what model do you have? Any specs would help us find out if one of us might have ram, or even the cheapest place to get it pumped up.

Oh, please, please, please.

My eMac is a 700MHz powerpc G4.

  • 256k on-chip level 2 cache
  • 128MB SDRAM, support up to 1GB
  • 40GB Ultra ATA hard disk drive
  • 10/100BASE-T ethernet
  • CD-RW (No dvd player, mores the pity. Wanna rectify that far in the future)

I would SO appreciate any thoughts on the cheapest way to get this baby upgraded.

It's gotten so bad, I'm fantasizing about finding a Mac-savvy person in the DC area to ply with homecooking just to get someone with some expertise to come, look at all my stuff (5 Apples, 3 working), help me discern what to f/c/m and point me in the right direction to make it all work together. This, from a reasonably competant user.

I'm feeling somewhat whelmed.

It looks like it's easy to do it yourself for some tasks.

I'm getting very grumpy with my Palm Tungsten E. I knew that the rechargeable battery wouldn't last as long as the AAs in my old Palm III, but. I checked the charge when I left the house this morning: 75%. When I opened it at 3 pm to make a note, it gave me a low-power warning. WTF?

I don't use it all that often, but it's just not staying charged.

How old is it?

About a year, I think.

All is well that ends in pizza.

Your mac takes PC100 8 NS DIMMS, which were pretty standard. You should also be able to install PC133 DIMMS, which are backwards compatable.

DealRAM has listings of places with 512MB DIMMS (PC133)starting at around $60, with OWC having it for about $80. PC100 is about the same price [link] .

Many people recommend you send the extra bucks for OWC, as they offer lifetime advanced replacement (They send you the new, you send the bad back afterwards).

I found the OWC listing and am ready to order. Is either PC100 or PC133 preferable for any reason?

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

Sounds like something keeps turning it back on. Is it kept in a case? A purse? A pocket?

I haven't heard about this with the Tungsten E, but my Dad this problem when he first got his Zire 71. There wasn't enough clearance between the factory flip-cover and the center button, and whenever there was any pressure on the outside of the case the PDA got turned back on. It happened often enough that the battery wouldn't last through the day.

Beej, it shouldn't make a difference, as the PC 133 just means it's made to not fail for those machines that have faster bus speeds. I checked the OWC listing, it lists your machine.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Remember how my G5 didn't come with the Airport Extreme card I ordered? Well, when I opened it up today to install the replacement card I was sent, it turns out that I already had one in there. (It just wasn't properly installed -- once I snapped it into place, it worked fine.)

So now I have an extra one. If anyone wants it, they can have it for $50. (I'll x-post in Press.)
