The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

I want an iPod that is also a handy PDA.

This has been doable, in a limited way, for several years now. As I understand it, the iPod's advantage is in memory size and battery life, but what's available through a PDA isn't too shabby.

My Clié is more than three years old, and being able to play .mp3s was one of its selling points. Each of my 128Mb memory sticks holds two hours of music, and my PDA case holds five of them, plus the one that rides in the Clié itself. Changing sticks every two hours is not really a hardship. I still get six hours of .mp3 time out of a full charge.

I know that memory cards for Palms are up to at least 516Mb now. I don't know what battery life is like on the current model Palms, though.

ita, have you ever done a comparison between your T5 and your iPod?

Hey. New board.

I have a 1 GB card sitting here waiting for my arriving-tomorrow Dell Axim. It was $75 shipped and taxed (the card, not the PDA) through newegg.com. I expect mp3s and even Divx movies (maybe The Inside, since I don't really have time to watch it now. Airplane viewing!)

Still, the points about integration are quite important: this won't sync with iTunes, it won't even play ITMS songs, and it's only vaguely supported on a Mac at all.

Yeah, see, I want it to be all nice and sych-y, and I want it to hold multiple gigs (I mean...I didn't get a minipod for a reason, but if it even had like, 4-5 gigs, i could probably live with having the important musics!)

Partly this is me rebelling against the "cellphone does EVERYTHING!" thing that seems to be happening--I don't want my cellphone to do everything! Just be a cellphone!!

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Battery charge while playing music-wise? No -- I've never bothered to load it up. In fact, I don't have a memory card, since my non-music stuff doesn't take up enough space to warrant one.

Sir, it's not an offence to let your cat eat your bacon. Okay? And we don't arrest cats, I'm very sorry.

I want a blender attachment for my cellphone so I can mix margaritas....

Hey. New board.

There's actually a company that just started releasing cellphones with exactly that in mind: they're just cell phones, old school. They can speak, they can text, that's it. I've forgotten the company, but they were mentioned on Slashdot a few weeks back.

If Apple decides to really get (back) into the PDA business (more Newton!), I'm sure they'll at least make it iTunes playlist-sync compatible, though i'm not sure they'd put in a 20 GB HD. Still, the Lifedrive shows that there's probably a market for a PDA with a Mini-sized HD, so maybe they'd go for it.

Me, I'm hoping their R&D is going into a Tablet Mac instead. Because the concept of the tablet is so freaking cool, and it's been implemented so freaking poorly, I want them to show that it can WORK.

Our wings are not tired

Yeah, I really want a tablet Mac. I'm pretty sure the next PC Laptop I buy will be a tablet as long as they finally get the screens up past 1024x768.

Being able to run my acoustic modeling and analysis software with a tablet wi-fi'ed into the booth is pretty much where I want to be.

So, I promised my sister a camera for her birthday. My stipulations are that it has to be small (smaller than your average 35mm point and shoot) and that it has to use an SD card. Her stipulation was that it needed to have a zoom lens, so really, she's not demanding.

Does anyone have any specific model names to toss out for me to start researching with?

I look more rad than Lutheranism

I have no idea what an SD card is, but check the Canon Elph.
