Hey. New board.

Huh. That's weird. The refresh rate is right next to the resolution in the Displays section of System prefs on 10.3, and it looks (based on Apple's support site) that it should be in the same place in Jaguar. Is this computer a laptop? (the fact that you have a brightness control leads me to suspect it might be, or maybe an Aple display...) If it is, is the problem with the built-in LCD or an external monitor?

it is not a laptop, and the problem is an external Apple monitor

Hey. New board.

Apple CRT or LCD? If it's an LCD, then I doubt the refresh rate is your problem. My knowledge of display technology is fairly limited, but I think that LCD monitors have a native refresh rate, just like they have a native resolution, and it's usually quite high. Plus, since LCDs don't use scanlines at all, you don't get a flicker effect (the main cause of headaches) even with early LCDs that had super-low refresh rates.

If it's a CRT... well, then, I'm very surprised it's not in the "Displays" panel. That's definitely where it is on my machine but, like I said, I'm running a newer version of the OS.

ETA: And now I have to go. Hopefully somebody else will be around soon to help you through the rest of your troubleshooting.

Apple CRT or LCD?

I'm embarassed to say I don't know the answer to this, or how to find it out.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

I'm embarassed to say I don't know the answer to this, or how to find it out.

In non-tech terms, is it a TV-style monitor (CRT) or a flat screen (LCD)?

I may as well pose the question here - what would I use on an iMac to play a .wmv file?

To play .wmv files on any Mac, the easy -- and free -- option is to just download Windows Media Player for Mac.

Thanks Steph! I'm surprised the friend I bought the computer from didn't have that on there somewhere, but it might be one of those things that got left in the other operating system (I can boot up in two different versions).
