"There are two sorts of people in the world: those who believe Joss Whedon is a genius and those who are wrong." - Connie Ogle, Miami Herald

I need some networking help. Currently, the broadband connection in our house is in another bedroom, with the cable modem going to a wireless B router so my laptop and Tivo can get a signal, while wired connections run off the back of the router to another Tivo and to a desktop.

Once my shiny new Dell Dimension XPS arrives in about two weeks, I want to move the cable modem and router to this side of the house so I can plug directly into broadband and utilize the connection's full speed.

I could always get two more wireless USB adapters like the one currently attached to the first Tivo and hook the second Tivo and other desktop into the network that way. However, if I wanted to use the existing wired connections, am I right in concluding that I would need a wireless bridge and then a switch? (Or a combo bridge/switch, of course. It looks like two adapters might generally be cheaper, though.)

Our wings are not tired

I'm still looking through my piles of technology. I've got my old Treo 600 here, anyone interested in buying it? I'm thinking $225 for it. It's a GSM model.

Mostly lurking...

So, I've got a livejournal question. I'm logged in, but it only lets me see the unlocked friends posts. I don't think *everyone* has unfriended me since earlier this morning. Is anyone else having this problem? Or do you know why it might be happening?

On edit: I've tried logging out and logging back in, closing and opening a new browser and rebooting the computer.

All is well that ends in pizza.

VW, do you have an alternate brower? Netscape/Firefox/etc? Might be worth it to find out if it is your account or your computer.

Also you might want to clear the disk cache in the Internet control panel.

If I can think of more, I'll let you know.

VW, LiveJournal has a note on their help page that may explain some of the wonkyness. It's not exactly the issue you have, but it may be related.

Free users on the FiletMignon cluster (Where am I?) may find that their journals are temporarily in read-only mode, due to maintenance being performed on the cluster. Please see lj_maintenance for more information.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

I doubt that's it, because vw is a paid user.

Other than that, I have no idea. It's working fine for me.

Ok. It appears to be working again. I cleared stuff and rebooted again. We'll see if it sticks.

Thanks!

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

This is awesome:

Beam your craigslist ad into space

WHAT: craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster won an eBay auction for the first private communication transmission light years into deep space, with the idea of offering this opportunity to craigslist users.

HOW: The friendly folks at Deep Space Communications Network (DSCN) will beam the postings trillions of miles into space using redundant klystron transmitters and a satellite dish.

I do believe in killing the messenger, you know why? Because it sends a message. ~ Damon Salvatore

another ipod question. i'm plugging it in to my work computer(which i've done before), but iTunes doesn't seem to recognize my ipod. it's recognizing that something is plugging in, but it has it listed as "SYS" and there is absolutely no music listed under it. i've ejected and reconnected several times. restarted iTunes a few times and even completely rebooted my computer.

my ipod is fine. all the music i had dled is still there. any ideas?

A turkey in every toilet -- only in America!

I need to reformat a 200GB internal hard drive on my WinXP Home box from NTFS to FAT32 (I've backed up the files onto another HD). When I go into the disk management utility, it only gives me the option to reformat as NTFS.

Any suggestions?
