Many people find that hooking the DVD and VCR into an RF Modulator like the Jensen [link] DVD-647 works well. The DVD RCA input to it will override the VCR Cable signal when turned on.
There are fancier rigs.
Problem with DVD->VCR->TV is that copy protection inside the VCR can crop up and ruin the viewing.
That is getting too fancy for me, Daniel. My understanding of electronics is really very simplistic. I like color coordinated plugs and cables, for instance, and clear cut step by step instructions. Beyond that I get a little intimidated, though for some reason, I'm often the one left to try and figure it out.
Another issue is that they've put in a new VCR since the last time I was here, and its hook-ups are all different, so I don't really feel like messing with it, since I wouldn't have the faintest clue how to set it back up, if necessary.
Not really fancy, just plug the VCR into one connector, the DVD into another, and the TV into the output.
But first the purchasing and the shipping parts of life.
Unless you have a Wal-Mart nearby.
Alli,
how many jacks does your TV have? I think you should try the chain without the DVD player and see if you get it to work.
I'm confused as to why cable needs to be in two chains in your setup, Alibelle.
FWIW, my cable-->Tivo-->VCR-->TV uses all coaxial cables, and it works just fine.
The problem is is that I only have two AV cables. So, I could hook up the dvd player to the tv using one, and I could hook up the TiVo to the cable box with the other, but I can't then hook up the TiVo to the tv with an AV cable, like the picture in the start up guide. So, currently, the cable box is hooked up to the tv with a coaxial cable, and it is the only thing hooked up to the tv. From the cable box, the VCR player is hooked up, using odd cables that I'm not terribly sure about, but I've been assured it works, and the TiVo is also connected to the cable box, and the DVD player is coming off of that.
So, now, from what you guys have said, I'm going to try to hook up the DVD player to the TV on its own thing, and I'm going to hook up the cable box to the VCR and the TiVo, and then I'll connect the coaxial cable coming off the tv into the TiVo, rather than the cable box. And then I'll cross my fingers and hope it works.
Ali, here's what I'd recommend:
1. Isolate the DVD player.
2. Run the cables (whichever you have) cable box->TiVo->VCR->TV. But I'd get the VCR out of that loop as soon as you have the cables for it. For nothing other than neatness, really. It doesn't break anything.
