How old is your computer? The most likely problem is the battery that keeps your clock running (amongs other things) when your computer is not on is getting old.

This computer was built in the spring of 2003. I just replaced the power supply the spring of 2004 (I think you remember that ordeal).

One possibility was that I was running low on virtual memory before I restarted. When I work on my thesis, I have Reference Manager open, which must be pretty memory-intensive, plus five or six IE windows open for the papers, and Winamp. I, personally, don't think that should be that huge a load on the system. I've got 256 MB of RAM, I think. Or maybe 512.

A couple of years ago our departmental server went flukey and set the dates on all of computers as 2060. Most of the software stopped working because the licenses has long since 'expired.'

But there was one very patient bit of statistical software that started up fine, with the warning "The license for this product expired 22,637 days ago. If you do not renew your license soon, the software will stop functioning."

I need help installing Quark 4.04 on my Mac.

Background: We want to buy the current version of Quark, but would rather buy the unpgrade rather than the full thing. We have Quark 4.04 that was purchased for this office 4ish years ago. it is not currently installed on any computer. I am trying to install it on mine.

I am following the directions, and a restarted in the classic environment (since Quark 4.04 does not mix with OSX).

When I put in the CD, there is no installer. Ther is something called zddatafile.1, which looks like it might be the installer, but I 'do not have the application program which created it'. The directions just say click on the installer.

I am really just looking for a definative answer on whether or not this can be installed so I can get the upgrade. personally, since is not my money, I do not care much one way or the other.

Are you sure you need to install the earlier version to upgrade? Different software companies work upgrades in different ways. Sometimes the upgrade is the full version; it's enough to have the serial number for the earlier version in order to qualify for upgrade pricing. Other times, when installing the upgrade, you're prompted to insert the CD for the old version. Maybe try contacting Quark to ask?

I'm going to convert one of my boxen to Linux. What distro is the best if I'm planning on using it for a file/web/app/DB server?

I've only really used Red Hat, and I'm out of touch with anything that's happened in the marketplace in the last four or so years.

ita, we're running SuSiE on the file server, but I'm not sure exactly why that was the choice.

We're happy running FC3, but it was the choice because we're too lazy to play comparison-shop-the-distros.
