Agreed. The squick I get, at least when we're talking about a 16 or 17-year-old, is less about the age difference and more about the fact the teacher is in a position of authority. I don't think it's usually a great idea for teenagers to date grown-ups, but people and situations vaery way too much for any general rule to make sense.

What if the male teacher isn't skeevy?

I would call the situation itself skeevy, regardless of what the teacher is like, because there's major imbalance in power in a teacher/student relationship, and I can't imagine it being sexualized without at least some amount of exploitation. If it were an emancipated 16 year-old and an older dude she met in a coffee shop, then I wouldn't have much issue with that.

Case-by-case works for me. One of my best friends in High School moved in with his teacher at 16 and they were together 7 years and are friends to this day. He has been happily married for almost 20 years to someone his own age, so go figure. One of Jason's friends is a couple who met when she was in high school and she was her teacher and married after she graduated. They were on "Newlywed Game" at one point, actually. They have been married for 25 years and seem very contented.

Now that's what I call ahead of its time. I didn't realize the "Newlywed Game" was quite that liberal, though. :)

I think it does depend largely on the couple's dynamic. I've been highly skeeved in a couple of my own flings by older guys who were a bit too invested in the whole Daddy/Son stereotype. (Dude, I'm a grown man who's been taking care of himself more than a decade, and I didn't need anyone giving me "guidance" even when I was a teenager. Don't ask me questions using the third person like I'm a toddler!) But others of similar age approached the interaction as equals and everything worked out fine.

I've seen it--it's treated as a joke that they met while she was in high school. Kinda freaky. I have a huge squick about adult/Kid relationships, yet these couples don't squick me at all. My friend in high school was 16 and she was 22, so there wasn't a huge age gap and they didn't start seeing each other until he was out of her class, which might have made a difference.
