Lost: OMGWTF POLAR BEAR

[NAFDA] This is where we talk about the show! Anything that's aired in the US (including promos) is fair game. No spoilers though -- if you post one by accident, an admin will delete it.

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

So that when native speakers hear immigrants speaking their frozen-in-time version, it no longer sounds "authentic."

I even notice this when listening to American actors, newscasters, etc. in recordings or films from the fifties and earlier. The standard American accent has definitely shifted.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

From the NYT article:

In other words, Mr. Abrams said, there's plenty of room to develop more characters without a need for outrageous plot turns. There's no need, for instance, to have another plane crash.

"No," he said, laughing. "Although I wouldn't rule that out."

That would certainly be a fun OMGWTF. Especially if, like, everyone on the island were dead but for, say, Hurley, and he's hoping to be rescued, and he sees a plane in the sky, and he waves his arms, and then it starts coming down down down and woo, explosions! The sky is falling! Action satisfaction!

And then the plane is totally empty.

Kiss me, my girl, before I'm sick.

So, that work I was gonna do today? Didn't get anything done. I did laundry, bought some milk, and spent all afternoon downloading old Lost and Veronica Mars episodes from TiVo to tape. And, watching them all over again, predictably enough. 'Cause these two are some hella great shows.

Meara:

Lilly was very cute on Letterman.

Her face, man. Like that perpetual blush on her cheeks. Complexion to kill for.

I sort of wished Letterman showed a clip of the show instead of her chat commercial though.

Um, did I mention that the beach they're shooting on is about 200 yards from one of the project sites for my PFH?

Dude. If I were you, I'd totally sneak off to check out the filming site, IJS. There's gotta be some perks to the PFH being dragged out this long, right?

yeah...the Fuselage is on GMT time.

Really? Huh. I guess the beta was set up by someone in Britain?

(Damn, I liked my theory that the island was inside some weird time-warp dealio better.)

OMGWTF POLAR WEAR

D'oh!

I actually think she's got quite a bit of talent. A lot of the other cast members outshine her, it's true, but I think she's holding her own.

I was really impressed with her in the pilot--as a matter of fact, she was my favorite character after I finished watching the opening two-parter. The look on her face as she was counting to five? That was some great face-acting right there, which makes me think that she's got talents significant enough that could be brought out when skillfully directed. However, in certain scenes of late, her inexperience shows quite a bit. I was rewatching "Confidence Man" today (oh, the hardship!), and in the scene where Sawyer reveals the truth story behind the letter, EL was very much out-acted by Josh Holloway. Granted, the moment was there to show Sawyer's vulnerability, but Kate's reaction should have been more layered--mixture of shock, compassion, dismay and disgust--and Lilly didn't really bring that. It took me out of the moment a bit.

Seriously. I'm still reeling from the fact that we were blessed with two new shows this good, and they were both picked up.

I'm still worried about Veronica Mars though. I mean, it's not on next week against TAR premiere, but after that? I could totally get pummeled, because target audience for the shows (from what I hear) is similar. And UPN has been known to cancel the shows for which they'd promised a full season before, e.g. Jake 2.0. I'm hoping that the excellent critical response to the show would help it through some hardship ahead, ratings-wise, much as it was with Arrested Development last season.

Now, Lost-- I don't think we have anything to worry about there. Thank Jebus.

I do believe in killing the messenger, you know why? Because it sends a message. ~ Damon Salvatore

Yes, I got that.

ack! sorry. when i read your post before i read DH as DDK. you are absolutely right about people who only use their native language in their homes.

Really? Huh. I guess the beta was set up by someone in Britain?

actually, nope. both admins are from Florida. i have no idea why they decided to go with GMT time. i think Artie explained it once, but i've since forgotten his reasoning.

I was rewatching "Confidence Man" today (oh, the hardship!), and in the scene where Sawyer reveals the truth story behind the letter, EL was very much out-acted by Josh Holloway.

i'm really annoyed with myself for not taping these episodes. i guess i need to dl them. i have the kiss scene dled from a Josh fan site. as for EL being out-acted by Josh, that really was his time to shine and he pulled that off with flying colors.

And UPN has been known to cancel the shows for which they'd promised a full season before, e.g. Jake 2.0.

ugh. don't tell me that. i am adoring VM and can't wait to see where they're going with the Lilly stuff.

Hey. New board.

Veronica Mars is the best new show since, umm, wow. Something a really long time ago.

So. About that Lost. It's pretty cool, huh?

Sayid should totally steal Claire from Charlie. I will continue to say it.

DCJensen - Nov 14, 2004 1:41:13 pm PST #2444 of 10000
All is well that ends in pizza.

I must admit I worry about Claire and the baby. If either or neither doesn't survive the childbirth, it could cause much in the way of HSQ.

Hell, even if they *nearly* do, it could be edge-of seat time.

But then again, some of us have been wondering about it since the first episode.

But now with the Charlie and Claire cuteness, they've added another component.

Gris - Nov 14, 2004 2:04:13 pm PST #2445 of 10000
Hey. New board.

If Claire dies, I might have to stop watching the show. Because, in typical fashion, I have somehow ended up investing the largest portion of my emotional concern for the show in a character who gets far too little face time.

ETA: I think it's her incredibly pretty eyes. And her cute accent, even if it is fakish (I really can't tell.)

'we all walk this earth feeling we are frauds. The trick is to be grateful and hope the caper doesn't end any time soon"

Actually, the actor is Australian -- when she was on Roswell she faked an American accent, IIRC.
