Think of the Call as the acceptance of a burden.
Really liking this. I might phrase it a little differently, something involving "courage" and "convictions", but that is a quibble.
Hurley is Herald. He announces challenges.

Not always. Who could forget Walt's immortal line, "The pregnant lady fell down!"?
Ok. Both camps have a herald, now.
So far Hurley has only been comic relief. Perhaps he has Herald in his future.
Hark the Hurley?
OK, you guys. I will have to go back over the episodes so far and catalog my evidence. I have the impression Hurly is always announcing things. The water is running out. We're out of food. Kate and Dr. Tatoo are in wuv. This guy is bleeding to death t faint .
The comedic element is there. It makes the announcements more palatable.
So, Hurley is the Greek Chorus, gone solo?

Sort of like Giles as Exposition Guy. Which means Hurley's more a plot convenience than a character. I mean...I'm not dying to know his backstory. In fact I'm pretty sure his life up until the crash was stock boy at Wal-Mart and getting stoned with his buds and watching Scooby Doo and Kevin Smith movies.
I mean Herald, as Ms. Goodin has layed it out.

BtVS really conforms to the archetypes. Herald would be Buffy's first Watcher. Giles as mentor. Faith as shadow. Spike as Trickster.
