Everything looks good from here... Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive. We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land.' I think we should call it 'your grave!' The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration

This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.

By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.

***SPOILER ALERT***

"Fuck Western ideologically-motivated gender identification!" Sulu gasped, and came.

I could participate if it happens in the next month, though.

...I really enjoyed the read-and-discuss thing about HBP, and I'd like to do that again. But on the other hand I don't really feel very book clubby. Er. Which makes no sense, does it?

ponders

I think I don't really want to make a commitment to being part of a group who will definitely be reading X thing at X time, is probably it. Er.

I can't be sure but I think Fay's flirting with us.

"We are the Goon Squad and we're coming to town...Beep! Beep!" - David Bowie, "Fashion"

Actually that makes a lot of sense, and, on reflection, is probably my own attitude as well. I suppose a discussion in Literary isn't out of the question, but it would be in and around a bunch of other convos. That, and comics discussions have ended up in Other Media by default. It could happen there instead but, as with Literary, there will be discussions in and around it as well.

Which isn't really helpful, is it? You're probably right - nothing to see here.

If we were to do Watchmen or V for Vendetta as a selection, I think we should have at least one discussion guide/leader. Can we get someone with the requisite expertise to make that kind of commitment?

Also, between the two, I think Watchmen would be a better text for discussion, particularly for people who are new to the genre. V is an excellent and arguably superior work, but I don't think the characters and story would work as well for our group.

I would ask you to elaborate on why you feel that way but it that could lead to, heh, discussion.

On a more serious note, Watchmen might also be better since there will probably be V discussion at some point, somewhere here with the movie coming out. However, I think discussing either should involve discussing the work in the larger frame of Alan Moore's work.

Not volunteering to lead, though. I wouldn't know where to start.

Been ages since I've read Watchmen. I don't know where I'd find a copy.

It's not really a big thing. Just from previous book discussions and comments made, we tend to like good juicy stories with characters we can relate to. Watchmen is full of that stuff. Not that V isn't, it just wasn't as accessible, at least to me when I read it.

I'm sure many libraries have it, I know mine does. Also online retailers like Amazon, Buy, Overstock etc. have it for around $13-$14.

Perhaps this is partly because V for Vendetta is overtly English, whereas Watchmen is set in the US?

But I agree that Watchmen blew me away. Well, they both did, but I just finished Watchmen yesterday, and there's SO much there.

Comic books? In libraries? t hears my local librarians sniff in contempt

I'm sure that was a factor. Also without getting too spoilery, the motivations for the main characters were interesting and complex, but not so much relateable, if you know what I mean. It would be like discussing The Inside's Web and Rebecca without a Paul. Does that make sense?
