The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration

This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.

By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.

(Neither am I, AmyLiz, and I think my copy is overdue. I'm not looking at that, until tomorrow. The sad thing? I love Potok, and love what I've read of Asher, so far. The first book didn't interest me all that much, so when I didn't get to it, I didn't mind. This is killing me in a having everyone's-a-half-season ahead of me-watching-Buffy, when-I have-the-tapes, kind of killing me way.)

Well unlike being half a season behind in a tv show, the beauty of Book Club is that every month is a clean slate. And I'm fairly certain I'm going to fall behind some months too. (I'm still not finished Small World yet due to my literary philandering with Stephen King and Laurell K. Hamilton.)

I suggest for those of you who find yourselves with less book time than you'd like, maybe skip a book so you have two months for the next selection. (Of course this plan only works if we have at least two books chosen ahead of time.)

I'd really like to be a selector, but I don't think I can participate actively for a little while. Can I be an alternate?

Selectors don't have to participate actively. How about if we put you down for the 4th book which means your selection will come up for discussion in 5 months?

Always Anti-fascist!

OK. My TBR pile is getting a little intimidating, what with the writing, and meatspace book group and, well, you get the idea.

Greece's financial crisis threatens to take down all of Western civilization - a civilization they themselves founded. A rather tragic irony - which is something they also invented. - Jon Stewart

I'll volunteer to pick a book.

I'd like to pick a book. Could whoever is composing a list (Wolfram?), add me to it?

I've really enjoyed the discussion so far. And the book choices have been great. They're books that I probably wouldn't have found otherwise, but enjoyed thoroughly.

heading off to read Small World... which I will finish.

Trudy and libkitty added. Should we start randomizing, or have folks select in the order they volunteer?

JenP - Oct 05, 2004 5:59:41 pm PDT #679 of 3301

Might as well start randomizing now. Then you don't have to decide at which point to start if the list gets very long. Or not. Whatever works.

If you're going through hell/keep on going/don't slow down/keep your fear from showing/you might be gone/'fore the devil even knows you're there

Sounds good. Do we want to consider giving folks an opportunity to throw a few more books on the list while we're getting this set up?

I think we left the book list open indefinitely, while cautioning folks to rec responsibly so the list doesn't become unmanageable. And FTR, the list of Buffistas interested in selecting a book is also open indefinitely.

Anyone have any suggestions for randomizing? Is there a program out there? Should we use the hat method?

What is even happening?

Why don't we just take people in the order they volunteered? It seems pretty random, no?

The hat works for me. Also, Lilty Cash's admin post #1 is behind, although not very. I'm not sure who can update it, hence the general posting.

Also, do we have a recent compilation of suggestions and suggestors that can be accessed online? What do people think about either adding that content, or a link to it, to the end of #1? Or, if a separate place would be preferred, perhaps P-C's #2 spot (only if you don't mind, P-C)?
