The Buffista Book Club: the Harry Potter iteration

This thread is a focused discussion group. Please see the first post below for the current topic and upcoming book discussions. While natter will inevitably happen, we encourage you to treat this like a virtual book club and try to keep your posts in that spirit.

By consensus, this thread is reopened specifically to discuss Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It will be closed again once that discussion has run its course.

***SPOILER ALERT***

Warren Ellis discusses what a bastard Holmes is here.

You guys rock! I'm really looking forward to this discussion. Also, I'm glad we have some other Holmes stories. I read them like an addict when I was about 10. Until HotB. I got about three quarters through, and was so scared that I wept with thanks when my mom took the book away from me. I stopped reading Holmes at that point (well, I had read most of the others already), and still haven't finished HotB. I'm really glad to have the opportunity to go back and finish it - hopefully with enough maturity to read it without nightmares!

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

Warren Ellis says a lot of what I had intended to say. Holmes is a prick. One of Watson's functions, I think, is to give you a character to identify with, one with human feelings. Some of the Holmes stories by other people try to make Holmes into a fuzzy bunny.

Does that schedule look okay to everyone? Do we need to post it in Press?

It looks good to me. I think Wolfram has been doing the Press postings. And perhaps Lilty could add it to the first post.

I think Wolfram has been doing the Press postings.

I really don't mind if others do Press postings, it is so not my thread. I'm just excited that we seem to be picking up some momentum again.

Ginger, why don't you go ahead and make the Press post. It might help people to register mentally that you're captaining the Holmes ship. Remember to include a link to Deena's page.

How are you me? You need to stop that. Only I can be me. ~Kara

Hey Wolfram, the link in the first post you made about HotB in press is no longer active. I rearranged things a little when I put up all the stories. Do you want to edit with the correct link? [link]

Done, and thanks.

Ginger, I think it might be a good idea to get that Press post up today, before the weekend. I'll throw something up this afternoon unless you tell me otherwise.

Pepto Bismol's good for that.

Damn, I Press x-posted with Ginger. Since I deleted it there, I'll share it here.

Sudden yet inevitable Book Club Update:

Fearless leader Ginger has appended 4 Holmesian short stories to our selection of Hound of the Baskervilles. All 5 selections are available in beautiful HTML format (thanks Deena!) here: [link]

Discussion dates are as follows:

"A Scandal in Bohemia" and "The Red-Headed League" - Wednesday, September 7, 2005.

The Adventure of the Speckled Band, and The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle - Wednesday, Setember 14, 2005.

First half of Hound of the Baskervilles - Wednesday, September 21, 2005.

Second half of Hound of the Baskervilles - Wednesday, September 28, 2005.

Each discussion period will be cumulative and incorporate the prior selections, so participants are urged to read all selections in tandem. (Shameless plug: This is a new approach we're trying, so if you've never subscribed to Book Club before, or have and didn't like previous discussions, now's a great time to check in.)
