Holy crap, that's awesome!
And I'm pretty sure that line was totally hysterical, imagining the delivery.
'War Stories'
A place to talk about movies--Old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.
Holy crap, that's awesome!

So awesome. So hysterical.
I didn't stay to talk to him afterwards, simply because I had a feeling the first question I'd ask would have been, "Can I give you a hug?" And we've been specifically warned not to do that to our guests.
But he is definitely the coolest.
Wankers!
Apparently all of MGM's 'theatrical wide screen' DVD releases for the last few years have been the pan-scanned versions with the top and bottoms cut off.

If you own any of the eligible movies, you have until March 31 to either opt to exchange your copy for $7.10, or a new DVD from MGM, presumably in its proper aspect ratio."
eta: PDF list of movies eligible for replacement, etc. (site has been slashdotted so is a little slow now)
Damn, there are a lot of movies involved....
At first glance, it looks like the only movie on that list that I own in DVD format is Bull Durham, which you can DAMN betcha I want in the proper aspect ratio.
Lotta Buffista favorites on that list, like The Princess Bride, The Cutting Edge, and Bull Durham [ eta: xposty]. Of the movies I own, there are four on that list: TPB, Some Like It Hot, The Sum of Us, and Y Tu Mama Tambien. Will have to go home and watch them now to see if they look wrong.
I've got Carrie off of that. Hmm.
I have The Princess Bride, Spinal Tap, and 24 Hour Party People. I probably won't bothter with the exchange, though.
I wonder if we'll be able to tell the new versions apart when they hit the shelves. Maybe they'll say on the case, "Widescreen Edition - no really, this time we mean it"?
24 Hour Party People
I've got this, among others, as well. I suspect because this one was shot on video that it may not be an issue.
Some of the items on the list I know have been reviewed in Video Watchdog, and they usually spot crop-boxing (as they call this manouver) a mile away. I wonder if they missed it, or if some of these aren't as bad as others.
Princess Bride, Dr No and Fish Called Wanda. Interesting.
