I'll be awtching it, just 'cuz, but I've already mentioned in Bitches that it's bound to bug the living crap out of me, because the preview features a line by CF's Alexander talking about "uniting the lands and freeing the people," and I hate, hate, HATE this trope in historical epics SO MUCH!
Nobody back then gave a flying fuck about freeing the people, especially not Alexander. I really hate historical epics making all previous empires into America wannabes.
Right. I am thinking, generally speaking, that conquering countries with a shockingly powerful army in the name of "freedom" is mega-stupid.
Oh, wait.
I saw
Dirty Pretty Things
this morning. In the middle, I was afraid it would turn into
Sister Carrie
on film, but then it didn't, and I was happy. I really liked the lead, and his Chinese mortuary asssitant friend. I had forgotten it was a Stephen Frears movie till I saw the credit, and then I got to the end and thought, "This is exactly the sort of movie Stephen Frears would make."
So, we went and saw
Team America
this afternoon. I agree with everyone who said it wasn't as funny as the SP movie, but it still had its moments. My personal favorite was the way
everything Team America came near was destroyed.
On the way out of the movie, DH and I got to talking about Stone and Parker's apparent hatred of the Baldwins. Does anyone know what started this, or why they are so fixated on the Baldwins?
Loved it and shall own it.
Agrees with Aimee yet again.
I saw Vera Drake today -- very good performances. Depressing as hell, though.
I also saw Finding Neverland on Thursday, and it was very sweet, but a little on the nose at times. Johnny Depp is painfully beautiful. Kate Winslet is in a rather thankless role, but she plays it well. (I don't blame her for wanting nominated for Eternal Sunshine instead.)

I'm looking forward to this, but I fear it willnever play here.
I saw
The Grudge
on Friday night at 11pm. THAT was fun! If you like scary movies that make you jump, this is the one to see.
I saw it this afternoon. Interesting, but not as spooky as the original.
Though I did discover firsthand that the last thing you want to see after leaving this movie is a 7-9 year-old Asian boy darting past you in the crowd.
Either I missed them during a brief bathroom break when
the detective went to the house to set it on fire,
or the two scenes that freaked me out in text must have been in the Japanese TV-movies rather than Ju-on or its American remake.
Are the Japanese versions available to rent at Blockbuster? I was thinking it might be worth it to watch the originals.
The scenes that made me jump the most were when (spoilers):
1- Karen and Doug were
on the train and the specter's head flashed onscreen when they were going through a tunnel.
I literally screamed (but then again, so did everyone else)
2- When Susan (the sister)
jumped into her bed to hide and the specter was at the bottom and pulled her right into the middle of the bed (Nightmare on Elm Street, anyone?)
I think the one thing that really helped the scare tactics were the setups by the music at certain points and the lack of them (
the scene on the train being one of them
).
I also saw the preview to National Treasure. It just occured to me that Sean Bean likes to play "bad guys". (i.e. LOTR - ok not bad, but kinda; one of the James Bond movies, and this one apparently).
