Buffista Movies 3: Panned and Scanned

A place to talk about movies--Old and new, good and bad, high art and high cheese. It's the place to place your kittens on the award winners, gossip about upcoming fims and discuss DVD releases and extras. Spoiler policy: White font all plot-related discussion until a movie's been in wide release two weeks, and keep the major HSQ in white font until two weeks after the video/DVD release.

The more I learn, the more I realize how little I know.

But...but...recognizing the silly technology and science isn't nit-picking, it's part of the humor.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

Heh. See, there's a certain level at which I just turn off the rational brain and handwave away the most ridiculous plot widgets with ease, especially since half the time I'm not really following the made-up science anyway (see: Spider-Man 2, for another recent example). Like I wasn't sure whether it was the actual rocket that was going to DESTROY THE EARTH AND EVERY LIVING THING UPON IT! or whether it was something in the rocket that was going to communicate with the base and trigger a bomb or doomsday device of some kind there. At that point, all I need to know is "something BAD will happen, la la it doesn't matter how!" It's at the simpler, smaller level, where I actually understand what's going on, that I feel free to nitpick.

Was there ever mention of where the rocket was supposed to be headed once the Earth was destroyed behind it?

Barsoom, maybe.

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

Funny you should say that, dcp. I Googled to get your reference. But EW mentions Conran's next project is an adaptation of A Princess of Mars.

Conran's next project

Huh. I didn't know that.

I guess the rocket must have been headed for that empty planet next door, the one that everybody knows about, but no one mentions.

aka "The artist formerly known as Corwood Industries."

Just saw Deliverance. That's an intense 45 minutes in the middle there, especially when the wind and rain are doing their thing outside.

You'll never hear the phrase "squeal like a pig" in the same light again, I'd bet.

I love that movie. It's pure grit and horror, and captures the mind-set of the New South perfectly: in love with its past but terrified by those living closer to it.

Hey. New board.

I watched The Shining tonight.

I'll be huddled in a ball rocking slowly back and forth on my futon if anybody needs me.

Trust my rage

Was there ever mention of where it was supposed to be headed?

I assumed it was some sort of Star Trek Genesis type thing as in re-creating Earth, but I actually think heading to Mars is a better idea. DH saw King Kong, but I totally missed it. I did, however, love the homage to Star Wars and Dagobah.

Also, must agree with P-C that Polly was extrememly irritating, althugh I get that it fit the trope.

Oh, and I love the fact that they released all the animals.

"When I look at people that I would like to feel have been a mentor or an inspiring kind of archetype of what I'd love to see my career eventually be mentioned as a footnote for in the same paragraph, it would be, like, Bowie." ~Trent Reznor

You'll never hear the phrase "squeal like a pig" in the same light again, I'd bet.
One of my favorite live trivia questions, from the Disturbing Movie Scenes category: "We don't know who's pitchin', but Ned Beatty's catchin'!"

Art Crawl!!!

I'm trying to decide between seeing Hero, Sky Captain or Wimbledon this weekend. Right now I'm leaning towards Sky Captain even though I know I need to see Hero on the big screen.
