As in love with the show as I am, as much as I want every human on the planet to love it as much as I, honestly, it really isn't for everyone. It isn't Firefly or Buffy. It is a suspense/thriller.
It is a teevee SotL. It is intense and rich. It isn't everyone's taste, and I expect noses to wrinkle at the level of violence so that maybe they won't stick around for the deep wells that are the characters.
I'm cool with that. Don't torture yourselves out of loyalty. I wish I hadn't watched the last two seasons of BtVS. I should have stopped watching Angel much earlier than I did.
But if it looks like shit to you, please, don't turn it on out of loyalty unless you have a Nielsen box. Why torture yourself?
Also, I'm unsure what I'd do different with the promos, I think they're pretty spot on, actually.
ETA: I'm sure I don't have to say this in present company, but in case anyone thinks I'm secretly working as a Reamworks rep, and infiltrating fandom, no, not speaking for Tim, I have no idea how he feels about the promos.

all the way through, I think, and completely missed it. I'd feel like I lost out, except I totally feel like I win for learning how to ignore advertisements so well, that I even miss the commercials I'd like to see.

SotL. I expect it to be more interesting and complex than the promos would lead me to believe. I like "intense and rich." I liked the psychelogical thriller aspects of SotL (as opposed the the what's-behind-this-door-iness of the ending).

Although, damn, for that kind of ending, once the lights go out and you go to the night-vision POV shot - hella effective. People were shrieking and gasping in the audience.

I do too. I don't think the promos make it look like a second-rate anything. I think they give people a good general idea of what the show is. Very Seven-SotL-insert other creepy horror/thriller movie title here.
I mean, does it show all the various cool aspects of the show? Of course not. It's a 30 second spot. (And last night's seemed shorter. Maybe it was a :15.) It's a teaser promotional campaign designed to get a broad audience tuning in.
