I saw it, and I hate to be all Negative Nelson again, but if I didn't know it was a Minear Production, I'd dismiss it as a second-rate suspense-horror Silence of the Lambs wannabee. FAQ Girl, who shares many of my tastes but is not tied into fandom, turned to me and said "that looks terrible!" She trusts me, and so will give it a shot, but left to her own devices she'd never watch it.
The Minearverse 3: The Network Is a Harsh Mistress
[NAFDA] "There will be an occasional happy, so that it might be crushed under the boot of the writer." From Zorro to Angel (including Wonderfalls and The Inside), this is where Buffistas come to anoint themselves in the bloodbath.
Maybe you guys just aren't the target audience for this one.
Agreed.
I think that a lot of the trailers/commercials are targeted towards people who dont' have much original thought. Therefore, the creators try to make it seem like something that the audience has seen before and liked. We, on the other hand, don't like copying or derivatives, so it turns us off.
I don't have much faith in tv trailers. If I did, I probably wouldn't have ever watched Veronica Mars, The Wire, or even Buffy, all of which had horrible-looking trailers. 'Course, some terrible shows also have terrible trailers, so there's no rule of thumb here, except that trailers suck.
Edit - promos! That's the word I was looking for.
Maybe you guys just aren't the target audience for this one.
You mean the promo and not the show, right? Because I can totally see Fox LCD-ing the show in their promos. Also, the people doing the shows don't do the promos, do they?
As in love with the show as I am, as much as I want every human on the planet to love it as much as I, honestly, it really isn't for everyone. It isn't Firefly or Buffy. It is a suspense/thriller.
It is a teevee SotL. It is intense and rich. It isn't everyone's taste, and I expect noses to wrinkle at the level of violence so that maybe they won't stick around for the deep wells that are the characters.
I'm cool with that. Don't torture yourselves out of loyalty. I wish I hadn't watched the last two seasons of BtVS. I should have stopped watching Angel much earlier than I did.
But if it looks like shit to you, please, don't turn it on out of loyalty unless you have a Nielsen box. Why torture yourself?
Also, I'm unsure what I'd do different with the promos, I think they're pretty spot on, actually.
ETA: I'm sure I don't have to say this in present company, but in case anyone thinks I'm secretly working as a Reamworks rep, and infiltrating fandom, no, not speaking for Tim, I have no idea how he feels about the promos.

I haven't actually seen a one. Just making a general point.
Just making a general point.
I think I should maybe change my tagline to: "Irrationally overprotective" for the next few months.
ETA: Actually, isn't that Kristen's job? Or is she in the reality based community?
