Is the new Cable Drama thread up yet?
Nope. We haven't agreed on a name, slug, or header yet.
I think the thread Title (the name that sticks with it in each iteration of the thread) should be straight forward and let people know what they'll be getting in the thread: Original Cable Drama.
You can have fun with the naming of each thread, as it rolls over. Make some proposals.
Here's some suggested wording for the slug (home page description) and header (top of thread description):
Slug: Discussions of original cable dramas we watch, that don't fit into the Boxed-Set or Premium Cable threads. NAFDA.
Header: A topic for the discussion of the original cable dramas we watch that don't fit into Boxed-Set because they're not of the Sci-Fi/ fantasy genre, and don't fit into the Premium Cable threads (because not all of us can afford HBO, you know). [list some shows and channels here to give people an idea of what they'll get spoiled for]. Expect adult content. This thread is NAFDA.
Play with it all, until you generate some interest and get something you like, otherwise you're never going to get the thread opened.
Would someone please explain why we need to specify "drama"? Why not "Original Cable Programming"?
It's specified, because it is not a thread for general cable TV talk. In other words, it's not for sci-fi/fantasy, game shows, reality shows (like "Real World") or comedies, etc. It is dedicated to drama because that's what the proposer proposed and we voted.
What Cindy said. Drama is a fairly elastic term - what are you concerned would be excluded using that language rather than programming?
I recall drama being discussed but whether or not to include some comedies was never put to a vote. Also I recall a few people stating that "Monk" and "Psych" are comedies but they are specifically listed as being included in the thread. Who decides?
I'd like to be able to discuss any original cable show. Venture Brothers is the first one that comes to mind.
That would be a different thread. And one may well come. But it's not, I think, what the vision was for this particular thread.
To get down to specifics, I'd say first of all that comedy v. drama is a judgment call on Psych and Monk. They're funny, to be sure, but for me they come down on the other side. Both were on hiatus, unfortunately, during the experimentals so I can't say I know for sure where they'd have popped up.
They have a narrative structure that seems more in line with dramas than straight comedies, though, which I think is a big factor. So drama can be somewhat elastic, and we can certainly take shows up as they come and discuss them where they fit most naturally. But keeping the lines, if not sharp, at least visible, is important to a lot of us because it builds better discussion.
