Ahhh, weremonkey. You know he delurked right around when Anathema was posting. There's one Gus post in Natter 8. After the death announcement I went back to Natter 9 (his first COMM'd post) and searched back and was surprised to see posts by Anathema.
Natter 9 was a busy time. meara had broken her wrist curling. Around the time of Cindy's father's death. I had just asked JZ to marry me.
I mean, I could feel okay if Gus were a pseud. I got along with that person/persona. But I'd really be angry to find out it was Mieskie/Anathema/Schmoker.
Where's John H. and his cynical sleuthing when you need him?
Current concerns aside, should the proposed Gus thread become whole, I would like to propose the thread begin with a post of:

I have to admit I'm pretty naive about fandom scams, but I'm willing to be guided by those who have in the realm of wait and see. While I wasn't suspicious when I heard the news last night, I still did some googling to try and find his obit or any other information. There's an obit site I found, yet could find no obit for a Guy Straley. I also tried everything I know at the UW website to try and find Gus. I belong to the WAA (Wisconsin Alumni Association) so if he was findable, I should have been able to find him. I can't. Not listed as fac/staff, not listed as an alum, nada, zip, zilch. I did a quick search of MadCat, the online reference library for the UW and couldn't find any articles of any kind with his name on them. I'm very sad to think this might be a psuedicide, I don't get the point of it.
Oh, Daniel that's got at least nine layers of irony considering the current situation.
Where did Mieskie/Anathema/Schmoker live? That Gus was in Western Wisconsin seems pretty well substantiated.

The schmoker theory sounds strange to me, as we suspected pretty quickly that mieskie had returned and no one suspected the same about Gus. I think the timeline is probably a coincidence.

I think this needs to be reiterated. He never did anything malicious or tried to dupe people out of money or anything like that. Even if Guy Straley was untruthful about many of his accomplishments, he was still a kind soul and a fun presence on this board.
Oh yeah - for the longest time Gus never gave us his photo. He had no digital camera (and no access to one), which is slightly odd for a demonstrated computer geek. Then he supplied one tiny picture.
Also, he never got us pictures of his kites. There was supposed to be some local TV news thingie on him and his kites - anybody ever hear what happened with that?

I'm just surprised no one suspected anything before, if there was this much sketchiness about. Like I said, I've recently had to deal with this kind of thing, and people were suspicious of the poster for a while. But it also turned out that quite a few people were suspicious and just never said anything. And then people got together and commiserated and Googled like mad and discovered all sorts of inconsistencies and yeah.
