Not expecting it to be broadcast can't change that. It is broadcast

Sure. And if say, my parents somehow stumbled on here AND found my posts, I would deal. That said, there is a certain expectation that my parents likely WON"T...and that if someone collected up my posts and emailed them to my parents, I'd still have a right to be pissy about it.

That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with Whedonesque or whoever copying Tim's posts, or mentioning us. And even if that somehow got us mentioned on CNN (to pick a random big mainstream media source), I'd still not be super worried that OMG the words I posted here will be OUT THERE! I'd be more likely to be worried that I couldn't "see" people I want to here because the volume of posting would be too high. :)

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Would it make any difference if Joss suddenly posted news about a Spike movie in Bitches and that was Whedonesqued?

I once proposed that we restrict access to Bitches only to registered members. The only people who voted for it were me and one lurker who supported me in e-mail.

Joss did post a couple of times about various comic book projects in Jossverse, and we weren't deluged. I don't think many people from b.org even noticed.

The question I have is whether links to Tim's everyday life conversations about beagles, the universe, and everything in Minearverse being posted at Whedonesque, or is it just links to his announcements about events in his professional life, like the fact that he got the go ahead for the pilot? The first would squick me, even though we do that ourselves in Nillytown, but the second seems to me to be reference to legitimate news. Much as I hate deluges, I think that goes with the territory. And really, as deluges go, this was a gentle little wave. We are more likely to get a deluge for a cancellation, because the show's rabid fanbase has been built up, so there's more people hungry for any information.

Our wings are not tired.

The big risk I see here is word getting out that we staged an intervention and talked him out of this ill conceived plan. We would get slammed, servers crashing, oh it wouldn't be pretty.

And then Ortus came and said "It's Ortin' time" and they all Orted off into the sunset

Would it make any difference if Joss suddenly posted news about a Spike movie in Bitches and that was Whedonesqued?

Any difference to what? (Being completely serious here -- I don't understand the question.)

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Any difference to the stance on not wanting links.

A key component for me here is the helplessness. We can't stop people from linking to us. Even asking them to stop is asking for people to act counter-internet. So I figure--act like anything is linkable, anywhere, for any reason.

Our wings are not tired.

The difference being the more personal and intimate nature of the posts in Bitches. We "know" that these conversations are open to the world, but it would feel different if there were an onslaught of new users in the thread.

The only way you'd know if there was an onslaught of new users is if they posted. Is that the differential? 500 registered users and 1000 unregistered could be reading it right now, and just have nothing they want to say.

If a poster is okay pretending that's not possible, that's fine. But thinking it's not possible is wrong.

That makes a lot of sense, and I agree. I still think it's polite to ask first, and I don't think it does any harm to say so.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

Joss suddenly posted news about a Spike movie in Bitches

I think he would go blind, reading Bitches TMI. Which would be funny! But not germane to the conversation.

Joss did post a couple of times about various comic book projects in Jossverse, and we weren't deluged. I don't think many people from b.org even noticed.

I remember that! It was pretty funny, realizing that even the famous people get ignored sometimes. Five days later, it was like, Oh, dude, that was Joss, and we totally ignored him! Well, I guess that makes him a real Buffista!

What is even happening?

How's that?
Like someone just did a whole bunch of drugs.

My take on it is that if you think anything here is in any way private, you're fooling yourself.

And of course, as Jessica, and maybe Allyson have pointed out, we all (at least all Buffistas who read/post somewhat regularly and aren't new to the internet) already know that. It isn't about that.

Buffistas is an open, albeit cliquey, community like many others on the way -- but it has some exceptions in terms of public interest (ie Tim). How best to deal with that, totally nothing to do with me. If somebody says to me 'Don't link or reference things Tim says here', cool. I'm fine with that.

We don't have a boss here, in terms of etiquette. If any poster isn't somehow in flagrant disregard over a community standard, nobody is ever going to tell that poster "don't". Instead, it's usually going to come to the following:

Buffista 1: We got Whedonesqued!

Buffista 2: Direct link, or to the board?

Buffista Simon: Direct link, but I edited it.

Many Buffistas: Simon's so fooooooooooooooamy.

Buffista 3: I hate when we get Whedonequed.

Buffista 4: Well, I only Whedonesqued us, because I thought it was cool news.

Buffista 5: What's Whedoneque?

Buffista 6:

Buffista 3: I hate when we get Whedonequed.
Don't you think "hate" is sort of a strong word?

Buffista 7: Only a babe in the woods would think the internet is private.

Buffistas 1: This is news?

Buffista 2: edited by Buffista 2 on Never 12, 2006 6:06:06 pm PST

Buffista 8: Um this is the internet; nothing is private

Buffista Strega: No starting posts with "um". Um. Wait. This is not my beautiful house.

All the Buffistas: Yes but we'll be your beautiful wife. Or husband. Or whatever. Same as it ever was.

Buffista Newbie: Except me. I'm a Eunich for Joss.

Buffista 10: That's Eunuch.

Buffista Newbie: U R meen.

Buffista Oldtimer: Have we ever explained about guacamole?

Buffista Newbie: Does it have cilantro in it, because I'm sort of allergic, or averse, or allergic.

Buffista Cilantro Lovers: THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS

Buffista Cilantro Haters: Bring. It. On.

The Rest of Us: SALAD SHOOTER SALAD SHOOTER SALAD SHOOTER!!!

Buffista Liese: [something sensible, respecting our tradition, while being open to different expressions of same]

All Buffistas Who Haven't "Left": Liese speaks for us!

...

Two months later...

Buffista 12: We just got Whedonesqued.
