Plan what to do, what to wear (you can never go wrong with a corset), and get ready for the next BuffistaCon: New Orleans! May 20-22, 2005!

Sometimes I think I might just move up to Vermont, open a bookstore or a vegan restaurant. Adam Schlesinger, z''l

I guess we've got cons of weather and what else? Maybe too much to do?

Vegetarian food can be hard to find, and plenty of restaurants don't have anything, but for anyone who needs it, I can give reccomendations of where to go.

Though I do remember from a guidebook (I bought several when we were planning a NOLA vacation that keeps getting put off until next year) a combo bowling alley-dance club. At any rate, a combo bowling alley-something.

Rock 'n' Bowl! They've also got glow-bowling, where they turn off the lights and you use glow-in-the-dark balls and pins.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Uh. I've never really come up against the cops, so...

They're probably not the fuzziest guys in the world. But I didn't really think anyone was planning on doing anything that would piss the cops off. It's not like Mardi Gras, where they're constantly on the street.

Just, you know, don't get so drunk that you decide you have to piss on the street or start a fight.

"This bar smells like kerosene and stripper tears."

Someone mentioned price, which I actually wasn't sure about. Sales tax is high, and if you're a silly tourist, you can probably pay too much for stuff, but the economy's pretty depressed there, which must keep some prices down.

In general, I find it pretty cheep, not only because of the economy, but the sheer volume of stuff.

Not a hub for any airline, so most people won't be able to get direct flights.

I can get a direct SW flight from Love field, but I'm unsure about other places. Isn't it an In'tl airport?

Yeah, Southwest probably wouldn't be a bad bet.

Okay, if we're actually discussing possible hotels in-thread, may I repeat my plea for more hard data, specifically previous year's rates? I asked about it a couple days ago and got no response, not even a 'wait until we firm the dates'. Thanks.

The rates for the last two years are in the 2005 RFP. The intention was to post it here via link. Noise Design? Did you get it?

I was told this by the Visitors Bureau Director about DC rates:

May is a very busy time in Washington, DC and hotels usually average $169-219/night for sleeping rooms. If your group is able to increase the amount they are willing to spend on hotel rooms, you may receive more positive responses. The only other thing I can suggest to you is to search Maryland hotels. They are very accessible to the city and the rates may fall closer to your range. - Jon

But I also remember their police force; those memories are not quite so warm and fuzzy; I was hassled and threatened. Has that changed at all?

It depends, but as long as nobody's doing anything like peeing in the street or flashing people, and no one has a fake ID, there shouldn't be any trouble. (Note to underage people: just about every club is 18 to enter, 21 to drink. If it's a bar with no dance floor, it's usually 19 to enter, 21 to drink. Most places don't care if under-21s are drinking a drink that someone else bought for them, but be careful. Also, a lot of clubs have a higher cover charge if you're under 21.)

We won’t stop until everyone is gay.

Japanese Tea Garden

Mmmm. Love these.

Juliana sure can sweet talk, can't she?

Must admit that the Last Call thing is tempting as well, given that's the *only* way I'd be able to afford any of that stuff.

Maybe too much to do?

Not much if you're outdoorsy.

Not much if you're outdoorsy and humidity sensitive, you mean? B/c I'd love to do a swamp tour, and there's no end of walking tours [Ghosts! At night when it's cool(er)!]

Yep, at Mid-City Lanes. Live bands (zydeco, rockabilly) with a dance floor, or you can bowl. Very very fun.

I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I miss them all tonight…

We have outlets galore, and yes, Last Call and Saks' Off Fifth right across from each other. In Downtown.

Ann, that's a ferret.

Maybe I should have said NSM. I had good times at Audubon Zoo, though I wouldn't recommend anyone go to NOLA just for it. There are also river and bayou boat rides.

And I should probably stop posing as an expert when my first-hand info is 20 years out of date.
