Funny thing about black and white. You mix it together and you get gray. And it doesn't matter how much white you try and put back in, you're never gonna get anything but gray.

LotR - The Return of the King: "We named the *dog* 'Strider'".

Frodo: Please, what does it always mean, this... this "Aragorn"? Elrond: That's his name. Aragorn, son of Arathorn. Aragorn: I like "Strider." Elrond: We named the *dog* "Strider".

A discussion of Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King. If you're a pervy hobbit fancier, this is the place for you.

That's the pain / That cuts a straight line down through the heart / We call it love

With luck, that means there's more to be put in there in the extendo-return. If the extendo edition is really going to be 4:15, I worry -- I can think of a lot of footage, probably more than 45 minutes, that needs to be shoehorned in!

Scenes I want to see included, off the top of my head:

Saruman's death
The Mouth of Sauron
Gandalf vs. the Witchking
The moment where we see Sam decide to take the Ring
Aragorn looks into the Palantir
We see how the Palantir affected Denethor
Merry swearing fealty to Theoden
The Houses of Healing
Eomer finding Theoden and Eowyn on the Pelennor
More time with sick Frodo in the Shire

I only know of a few scenes that will be in the EE. I'm probably most excited about the Mouth of Sauron . And I really hope we get to see that moment from the trailer with Eomer cradling someone's body (Theoden's?) on the battlefield . Gives me shivers.

Crazy, the lot of you. Frodo & Sam walking is the good stuff.

Word!

We're very stretchy. - Connie Neil

I love your list, Kate, but I don't think #4 is going to show up, since they decided to go a completely different route for the theatrical release, keeping everything Frodo-centric, as usual. What I'd love to see is Frodo and Sam being shanghaied by Orcs--this could be intercut nicely with the Houses of Healing stuff, since it would fit with the chronology.

Hey, Dom's got his skillz in order. I saw him in "Hostile Waters" (TV movie about the Russian sub what sunk off the East coast in the late 80's), and thought he did a decent job of it. Not a huge role, but substantial enough. And this was pre-LotR.

So come, my friends, be not afraid/We are so lightly here/It is in love that we are made; In love we disappear

I own this. I think it may have been viewed at the F2F, on mute, FF'd.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

Kate, two on your list were actually used in the recent Bio channel special (shown first on A&E's Breakfast with the Arts).

Merry swearing fealty to Theoden and Eomer cradling someone on the Pelennor.

I slo-mo-ed that clip, and from the fact the hair of the cradled person was very blonde and wavy, I'm guessing Eowyn. Theoden's was straighter, darker., shorter. 'Course you realize that's just a wish and a wank, right?

I find #4 on your list least important on mine. And I really, really don't want the last item on your list. I think the way it was done was visceral and bleak and quite affecting enough. More would blunt it, I think.

But I could be wrong.

Also, from the Science & Engineering Awards section:

To Stephen Regelous for the design and development of "Massive," the autonomous agent animation system used for the battle sequences in THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy.

Massive takes a new approach in simulating behaviors of large numbers of computer generated extras (a.k.a.) "agents." Each "agent" contains a primitive software "brain" used to develop behavioral rules simulating a wide range of behaviors. In THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, over 200,000 agents were controlled in several scenes.
