We're Literary 2: To Read Makes Our Speaking English Good

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

Ann, that's a ferret.

Not just bios of sports figures. There's quite a bit of sports-related stuff out there that isn't bios.

I'll go out on a limb with the 15YO -- older (less gruesome) mysteries? The first "grown-up" books I read (and ok, I was more like 12 or 13 at the time) were by Ellery Queen, Agatha Christie, and Erle Stanley Gardner.

Hmm - maybe some of the earlier funnier Sharon McCrumbs? Highland Laddie gone? Sick of Shadows. And the 15 year old is a Southerner too, in fact not too far from Monticello.

Good Trouble and Righteous Fights

I'm pretty sure I was reading Georgette Heyer when I was 15 or so--maybe something like These Old Shades, The Grand Sophy, or Frederica.

Well, we've covered a lot of bases, genre-wise.

2) A second birthday - a 15 year old girl, who is mainly into boys, and top 20 MTV music. She used to love to read, but apparently not so much these days. Want to get her a book that will remind her that just cause other things are fun too, books have not stopped being pleasurable.

Seek out the works of Sarra Manning. She's wicked talented.

We have - you have all made great suggestions. For the 15 year girl I think I'm going for the Grand Sophy. Romance to attract the attention of someone is currently boy crazy, and then humor and a strong feminist character to remind her there are other things in life.

Though I'll check out Manning too But I think something in Romance genre that is really clever with strong independent characters sounds like a good way to go.

Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.

Great choice--I LOVE that book!

Woe to the fucking wicked.

Maysa, IMO, that's not nearly a good enough reason to trust him completely, especially with that as the big secret reason
