I bought Time Traveller's Wife and that Jonathan Strange (big-ass) book. This is a big deal, as I rarely buy books.
Loved both of them! I actually bought the TTW a year ago and didn't read it until last month. I envy you having your first read of it because it's one of those books that you find thinking about during the day.
Jonathan Strange does get bogged down in the middle, but if you love history you won't mind a bit.
I'm in the middle of The Great Influenza, on Betsy's recommendation, and it's just fantastic. (Though I have to say, so far, the creepiest chapter has nothing to do with disease. While putting the pandemic in the context of WWI, there's a whole long chapter on Wilson's presidency during wartime, and the author keeps using phrases like "Wilson was convinced that he was not only enacting the will of the people, but also of God. He is the only American president, before or since, to have held such unshakeable conviction. It is an attitude more associated with crusaders than politicians." And I wonder if the author is rereading this now going, "Whoops, spoke too soon!")
I think I need to own TTW. (I've read it but I think I need to own it, you know?)
I'm still reading JS+MN. Still enjoying it too.
Be sure to look for the sequel: The Groom Swells With Pride.
Pssst! AmyLiz! It isn't *pride* making the groom swell....
I'm waiting for
