Taking over the world, pretty much. The implication usually seems to be not being anyone who actually seems to have power (President, Prime Minister, etc.), but running the banks and the media and having all the political advisory roles, to be able to run everything from behind the scenes.

Which Codrescu are you reading, Betsy? I read a lot of his stuff some years ago (living in Romania, hanging with friends of his), but the last I read was The Bloody Countess which I really didn't care for. Probably unfairly, as I'd been working on my own thing about Elizabeth Bathory at the time and his was not at all what was in my head.
