Look, you got a little stabbed the other day. That's bound to make anyone a mite ornery.

We're Literary 2: To Read Makes Our Speaking English Good

There's more to life than watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer! No. Really, there is! Honestly! Here's a place for Buffistas to come and discuss what it is they're reading, their favorite authors and poets. "Geez. Crack a book sometime."

It really doesn't matter. It's just an opinion. Don't worry about it. Not worth the hassle.

Man, if it would get me into airport chains of Books Inc? I'd blow whoever it took right there at Baggage Claim.

Airport bookstores are some of the most profitable on earth. There's a constant stream of people coming through them; an airport bookstore will order 175 copies of something off the best seller list, and just keep stocking them as the piles are decimated by people waiting for their flights to board.

Well not canonically, no, but this is transformative fiction.

Must be a pain, though, because unless the store is before the scanners, I don't think they let the causal shopper get through these days.

Who does any sort of casual shopping in an airport anyway?

For me it's always "Fuck. Long flight. Forgot book." If they had a decent selection, I'd always buy one instead of a crap magazine, or Scientific American which I'll only half read anyway.

For a good used bookstore I'll travel a couple of hours.

"Fuck. Long flight. Forgot book."

Yep. And the volume of traffic through airport bookstores - the number of people with exactly that thought, or its close relative "Fuck. Flight delayed by two hours. Need something else to read." - is huge.

The status is NOT quo.

For a good used bookstore I'll travel a couple of hours.

Squee! Anyone who makes it here for the summer party can go 20 minutes up the road to the fabulous used book store The Book Barn. It is not only a great source for used books, but also whimsical and charming as hell. The have a main barn, a "haunted" barn (for sci-fi, fantasy, and horror), little twisty garden paths, an "Ellis Island" cart set up from new books immigrating into their collection, and more. It's one of my favorite places.

They also have kitty cats everywhere!

"Cry havoc and let slip the boobs of war!" -- Miracleman

What else besides ramen can you scoop? YOU CAN SCOOP THIS WORLD FROM DARKNESS!

YOU'RE SO MEAN KRISTIN.

Myopic Books in Chicago, which tommyrot showed me, had a kitty. All used bookstores should have kitties.

Ann, that's a ferret.

It's not big on used books, but the Green Valley Book Fair runs about 10-15 weeks a year near Harrisonburg, VA. Great place for great prices on new books -- usually overstocks and the like.

(Edited for clarity.)

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

Steph, did you read all about the awesome rooms here?

Wow. That's within easy driving distance for me...
