A Scholar of Magics is about Jane, the best friend of the protagonist in A College of Magics, and takes place after the first book. I haven't started it yet, but I expect it stands independent of the first.

Praise be, I'm not the only one. Once my brain processed that "some bagels" had to be wrong, it immediately switched to "Sambucca". which somehow seemed more Madonna-like.

I finished A Gracious Plenty and loved it.

Of course, in a cheap sci-fi book, the main character's name would have to be something that sounds like a new brand of antidepressant medication -- and the story would be trite, gimmicky and shallow.
