I'm a little lost -- does being "off the table" mean you think they will die, or they won't? What's the table?

I think the way 'Suela and I have both been using it, by "on the table," we mean "prime candidate for painful, angsty death."

Okay, got it. Table = death.

"on the table" is sometheing that is actionable. For instance, it likely comes from auctions, as you bid for something when they bring it up to the table or dais and is presented for auction.

Now I'm curious to know if I'm right, time to Google, be right back.

Some cites seem to indicate it's derived from "Putting all your cards on the table" so far. Hmmm.

ETA: Either way, the whole gist is that something is under consideration and/or up for discussion when it is on the table.

I was going to say, it's used in negotiations all the time, as in "we can argue over X, Y and Z, but A, B and C are off the table". I think it's a generalization of the same metaphor that calls a computer's home base a desktop: you can only work with the things right in front of you on a nice surface, and the things not on the surface are not quickly (or at all) available.

My one comment about last night's Farscape is that it's down on the OTT-o-meter from season 4, but still higher than I like. I have an extremely sensitive OTT-o-meter, second only to the sensitivity of my implausible-attitude-among-aliens-for-a-cheap-joke-o-meter.

I think it's fascinating that Aeryn, the soldier, is one of the ones pushing for peace, but I wonder how far she's willing to hold to that before she decides that violence may well be the solution. Because negotiated settlements and genocide rarely work out well, I think...
