Okay I've watched the first five episodes of Farscape S1. I'm not saying it's bad tv, but it's just not grabbing me. When do I get grabbed?

I think "DNA Mad Scientist" was probably the first really gripping episode of season one. It stays a bit hit or miss until the second half, when things get really good.

Wasn't there a Farscape primer at some point during the campaign? Did it address questions like these, that generally come up with new viewers?

That would be awesome.

My problem right now is the gang has no direction. Nobody's in charge, they're not heading anywhere in particular, and if Crichton wants to get back to earth at all he sure ain't showing it. Basically they just float around waiting for bad shit to happen to them.

I figured the show must get better to have garnered the insane amount of fans and fan support that it has.

I'm terrifically busy with my ennui.

Edit: But beware spoilers. I think this was really designed for people who started watching mid-stream.

"Mister Spock is on his fanny, sir. Reports heavy damage."

He makes a wild stab at getting home in the one that takes place on a desert planet. The problem, really, is that he has no idea how to achieve his goal, and nobody particularly wants to help him. Actually, S1 is the only season where home is a reached-for goal. It becomes a fear/byproduct in S3-S4, and I thought tended to be handled badly.

From what I remember, they were trying for a more stand-alone show, but arc-iness crept in as season 1 progressed. I don't think it ever got Buffy/Babylon 5 arc-y, but it got to at least late DS9-level.

Only familiar with Buffy, but I'm glad it gets more arcy, although I don't mind a stand-alone show either. It's just not working well as one. And thanks Dana for the link.

Primer link is probably outdated because I am a ginormous slacker.

Works well enough for me. Although I guess I'm a little outdated too.

You want me to write Batman singing torch songs, don't you?

That ain't right, man. That's so not right, it lives in Wrongityville.
