An interesting post on merits vs. tastes in fandom selection in light of the discussion here yesterday, link gacked from metablog.
I don't know. I'm as sick as anyone of people proclaiming, "My show/my BSO/my OTP is better than yours because... it's better! Mines rule and yours suck!", but there *are* objective standards, surely. I mean, am I being unreasonable when I boggle at someone from SV fandom who accuses Buffy/Angel of lack of depth?
Well, yeah, there are objective standards. But they don't always influence our emotional response to something. I can watch something that's brilliantly written, acted, and filmed, and yet still leaves me cold.
My love for Farscape has managed to withstand the objective mess of the fourth season, whereas my love for TXF didn't survive the catastrophe of seasons 8 and 9.
There's a great John Carroll column I once saw, about how life is too short to hate what you love.
I kept half an eye on
Century City
last night, basically looking up every time Ioan Gruffudd was on the screen. Where was Nestor Carbonell?!?
Where was Nestor Carbonell?!?
He was around. I only watched the first 30 minutes, and remember him arguing with the chick from Strange World.
How did the episode end?
I got distracted by something or other. Possibly I was nuking some samosas for late dinner.
Hey-- was Nestor using his real voice or the fake-o accent?
Well, yeah, there are objective standards. But they don't always influence our emotional response to something.
True, that. It's difficult not to let your emotional response shade your objective analysis though. As you can see the flaws in the season 4 of FS and still love the show, I can see Stargate for what it is with all its flaws and limitation and love the show, and acknowledge the criticism of the show as valid. But with Buffy? I found it *really* difficult not to get defensive when people started trashing the latter seasons.
I watched about 35 minutes of Century City. It was laughably bad. Even Martouf in boyband wig couldn't save it. (I hear he died? Poor sod.)
Martouf was pretty, though.
Real accent, Shawn. Still hot.
News to warm Matt's heart.
Did I mention Nestor was a FoaF who was at Harvard at the same time? Hot and smart, eh?
News to warm Matt's heart.
Thanks Shawn. They'll still each need to go through a period of suffering to win me back (maybe they could each date Angelina Jolie, or somesuch?), but at least there's a chance I could get back into their show now.
