Me neither. I totally forgot what he went on to do, and assumed he must just suck.
Well, Perry did say he buried his leads, but then Clark is supposed to be what, only a junior?
Clark and Lana somewhat worked when they were just lightly craving each other from a distance. Lana worked as the kind of girl Clark would consider ideal, and during their scenes, it's like he's telling himself, "Go on, you're supposed to like her. Oh, just close your eyes and think of Lex."

Same year as Chloe, who'd I'd always assumed is a good writer. Clark, on the other hand, is really dumb.
So one can fanwank that Clark's future job on the Daily Planet is probably due to the influence of Perry White, Chloe or one of the Luthors. I could see Lex getting Clark a job in Metropolis, one to keep him busy during the day so that he'd have his nights free to be Lex's local tart.

It's integral to the existing definition of the character, yes. Lois is a great writer, and they have a rivalry in at least some incarnations.
It's a testament TW and the Smallville writing that I completely blocked it out.
I thought it might be that Clark uses his super abilities to get information that other reporters can't, so while his writing abilities might suck, the paper's willing to put in the money to have someone else edit his work because of the information he brings in.
Maybe when he goes to the Fortress of Solitude he gets a Gunnesque Funk and Wagnall download.
