Now, this would be the perfect time for a swear word.

Now let us crush something soft and watch it fountain blood. That is a girlish thing to want to do, yes?

"If you register and find that you're Jen #8, you can ask a Stompy to change your username to something more distinctive."

Something like this is good. And I don't think Tiffany needs to worry about whether there's already a Tiffani and a Tiffanie registered -- just about whether there's one posting enough to be more or less well-known on the board. So maybe something to reinforce the "please lurk first" message like:

If your name is "Tiffany" and you notice during your lurking career that there's already a "Tiffani" posting, you might want to register as "Breakfast" instead. If you find afterward that you're one of a crowd, you can ask a Stompy to change your name to something that won't get you confused with anyone else.

If I want to become a cloud of bats, does each bat need a separate vaccination?

Yeah. I have a cousin who is a Buffy fan who, if he decided to register with his real name, could register as Tim M. It's a poser.

IIRC, there was a loose consensus way back when that, even if Tim Miner (Or Josh Whedon, etc) is your real name, you should choose a username that's less potentially confusing. (Personally, I think Tim M. or Josh W. would be fine.)

[eta that I'm also solidly behind requesting that people register with pronounceable names, but I don't think we should make too big a deal out of it.]

with a gleam in my eye, and an almost airtight alibi

For example, if your name is Tiffany and there is already a Tiffany on the board, pick a variation, whether it be TiffanyT or Breakfast.

The board won't let you register as Tiffany if there is a Tiffany already on the lists, no?

Ann, that's a ferret.

The board won't let you register as Tiffany if there is a Tiffany already on the lists, no?

I would hope not. But my concern was more realted to "Tiffany T" and "TiffanyT" confusion.

Right. It's the potential for Tiffany/Tiffani/Tiffanie confusion that's the issue.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

It's the potential for Tiffany/Tiffani/Tiffanie confusion that's the issue.

Turns out this may not be theoretical anymore.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

Somebody *had* to do it, didn't they?

Our wings are not tired

I love my nick, it's not at all a real name. It feels kinda odd to see all this gunk about real names.

I love the fact that even my nick ended up getting a nick, almost everyone here refers to me as ND, I love it. I feel that it's part of my personality here. I don't want all this "Choose such and such type of name" stuff in the FAQ to be honest.
