Ann, that's a ferret.

we could also say that it has been board culture to use real names or names that sound real and that we feel it contributes to conversation and a feeling of community.

Worth a thought, but I'm not sure I'd go that far. Some pseudonyms do grab the imagination.

I'm more worried about confusion. If "Buffista X" is an established poster, it's only fair to ask "BuffistaX" to pick a new name.

I'm not sure how to address people with the same names as celebrities. I mean, anyone who's name is honest-to-God "Ronald McDonald" has enough problems in life.

Sometimes I trip on how happy we could be.

We do OK with all the Jesses. By which I mean the plural of "Jess" not "Jesse." I'm just saying.

True, we aren't easily confused. At least not since the Great David Debate.

Maybe I'm overthinking this one, and we can just deal with it if it happens without putting anything in the FAQ.

You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

New topic: I think it would make sense if COMM'ed filk went on to the filk page rather than the BRQG. Thoughts?

Well, the filk will be going into the filk site anyway, along with the other one that got posted last night. And Daniel's sonnet.

I'm not sure how to address people with the same names as celebrities.

Yeah. I have a cousin who is a Buffy fan who, if he decided to register with his real name, could register as Tim M. It's a poser.

You were a wrong baby who grew up wrong. The wrong kind of wrong. It's better you hear it from a friend.

Yeah. I have a cousin who is a Buffy fan who, if he decided to register with his real name, could register as Tim M. It's a poser.

Ask him if he'd be averse to registering as "Timmay!"

"It didn't taste good. It tasted soooo horrible. It tasted like....a vodka martini." - Matilda

How about something along the lines of:

Buffistas tend to choose user names that can be easily used in conversation. Sometimes they are people's real names or nicknames; sometimes they are the names they always wished their parents had the sense to give them. You may feel cosmically drawn to the name @$sd_myxp12, but "What @$sd_myxp12 said" does not fall trippingly off the fingers. To reduce confusion, please avoid the names of famous people, including ME writers, and the names of existing posters. For example, if your name is Tiffany and there is already a Tiffany on the board, pick a variation, whether it be TiffanyT or Breakfast.

Days shrink and grow cold, sunlight through leaves is my song. Winter is long.

Nice, Ginger. A question, though. Is there a roster of registered user names? One that's available to posters? How would a new Tiffany know there was already a Tiffany, a Tiffani, and a Tiffanie previously registered?

No, there isn't.

We're all getting played with, babe. -Weird Barbie

I love Ginger's revision, despite the fact there is no registry to check.

Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and altogether quite impossible to describe

To reduce confusion, please avoid the names of famous people, including ME writers, and the names of existing posters. For example, if your name is Tiffany and there is already a Tiffany on the board, pick a variation, whether it be TiffanyT or Breakfast.

Since there's no registry, maybe the wording could say something like "If you register and find that you're Jen #8, you can ask a Stompy to change your username to something more distinctive."
