I was charmed (albeit somewhat perplexed) by the fannish sensibility of many of the music choices -- it's like the director was trying to vid Canada. --loligo on the Olympic Opening Ceremonies

Boxed Set! : FS, SV, dS, et al.?

It's classy 'cause there's Latin in it...

Hee. Okay. There needs to be less punctuation, though, because it's making my eyes cross. Maybe we can dump the exclamation point?

Boxed Set 1: FS, SV, dS, et al.

Or, heck, even drop the abbreviations:

Boxed Set 1: Farscape, Smallville, Due South, et al.

A topic for the discussion of Farscape, Smallville, and Due South. Beware possible invasions of Stargate, Highlander, or pretty much anything else that captures our fancy. Expect Adult Content and discussion of the Big Gay Sex.

However, I'm just upset that people who have nothing to do with our subcommunity, no matter how small, got to decide it's fate

I struggled with this one. After Theodosia posted her plea about the consolidation, I almost voted "no preference" for items 6 (dS/FS/SV consolidation), and 9 (fic consolidation), but when we're at a point where:

  • we are in constant trouble with our service provider and 150% over on our server usage maximum
  • our member/liason with our provider is begging us not to open any new threads for at least a month, maybe longer
  • we are losing board-wide features (search, RQG, auto-refresh etc.)
  • our technically inclined members and developers are spending their free time going over code rather than playing with us
  • people are asked to change how they use the board (set # of posts to a higher number, stop doing birthday and number slutting posts, use "read new" instead of message center)

-- it's time for all of us to step up. This is why I argued so strongly for (in vain) closing Previously.

Also, leaves out SG-1 and (I gather, but have not read myself) burgeoning discussion of Highlander. And you know and I know that other cancelled fannish shows, which are kept alive largely via fanfic, will show up in this combined thread, like Sentinel. It's a predictable and I think reasonably preferrable topic drift, and I cringe a little at trying to squash together all the possible titles.

and

Sounds good, either in the thread title or the slug. I do think that some category-name like "Combined TV Fandom" is more flexible and less clunky than just a list of names, although I'll note there hasn't been a good punnish suggestion yet. Alas!

Nutty, we were asked by Kristen to keep it specific, so the thread wouldn't be taken for a default genre/fannish TV thread, because that could increase traffic. Topics always discussed in the singular threads are still welcome. The-same-drift-there-always-was is to be expected, but not advertised, because then it looks like an end-run around the "no new threads right now, please" request.

Southscape-1:
Description: Genreville. We go here to discuss programs like Due South, Smallville, Stargate SG-1, Farscape and other treasures. May contain mature content.

Daniel - ita had a problem with that, as well. It is explained in the post after the one you linked.

ita "Voting Discussion: We're Screwing In Light Bulbs AIFG!" Aug 23, 2003 12:50:43 pm PDT

Boxed Set! : FS, SV, dS, and other TV fandom

Again, we're not supposed to be open about the drift. This should lose the "other", even though there is an understanding that drift happens.

If we count no preferences when determining the majority, aren't we basically counting them as "no's"? My understanding has always been that no preferences counted towards the 42, but if a vote went 3 yes, 1 no, 89 NP, the yesses took it.

THIS. The 89 were showing up in the first place, to make sure the topic didn't have to be discussed again for a good long while. They were, in essence, showing up to say, "Those who care should get to decide," - leaving it between the yeses and nos to hash it out.

I bop to Wittgenstein. -- Nutty

As a relative newbie to the SV thread, and a non-reader of the other two, I'm not sure I count as a poster; but for the record, I'm not that happy that the combine-these-threads motion has passed, because I fear it means that I'll be dropping straight back out of the SV discussion on this board as it gets swamped in the rest. At the moment, I don't like either the IKEA or the smooshed-names thread titles.

Excuse me. I think I need to go and sit in the 'yes, I'm bitter, why do you ask?' corner.

S to the A -- using they/them pronouns!

Maybe Boxed Set: something else? Because I like the thread name, but what are we going to call it when we get to a second thread?

The lost sheep grow teeth, forsake their lambs, and lie with the lions.

With the Boxed Set idea, we could have "Season One, Season Two," etc. as a way of numbering the threads.

One last time, I think we're supposed to stay clear of saying "other," "et al," and the like in the title, name, slug, and description.

DXMachina - Aug 27, 2003 9:31:03 am PDT #4799 of 10005
You always do this. We get tipsy, and you take advantage of my love of the scientific method.

we are in constant trouble with our service provider and 150% over on our server usage maximum

We are now at about 40% under, according to what Kristen posted here. It appears the Random Quote Generator was doing most of the damage. Unfortunately, we didn't know this until well after most of the votes were cast. (Please note that this is not to say that we should go hog wild creating new threads, just that the belt-tightening doesn't have to be quite so fervent at this point.)

Because I like the thread name, but what are we going to call it when we get to a second thread?

Boxed Set 2?

Yes, and I know that. To clarify, I was responding to askye's point that everyone got to have a say on the fate of the three threads, and my point was, it was put up for a decision at a time when all those things were going on. Regardless, Kristen is still pretty pro-consolidation.

Ann, that's a ferret.

Deserves emphasis, especially because we're in summer vacation season with no new eps and more people on vacation than at other times.

Boxed Set 2?

I meant more like a Boxed Set Season Two: What creative phrase are we going to put here? kind of thing.
