Out of sheer curiosity, what was the purpose of "ides" and "nones" and all that? Do the Latin words have any significance?
Ides is derived from "to divide", and essentially is the halfway point of the month. Apparently it was originally meant to indicate the full moon, but that meaning got lost.
Nones is derived from "nine", and is the ninth day before the Ides.
The calendar worked by saying how many days it was before the next division point, i.e., today would be the second day before the Ides of August.
eta: There's a summary here.
Damn, I'm going to be on the way home when Natter most likely rolls over, so I just want to re-iterate "Beware the Ides of Natter" for 15.
So, it looks like the Natter thread is nearing it's end. What should we name the new one? :::kidding!:::
What the hell - palindrome slumber nut, awaaaaay!
The new thread's set up and ready to go. Time for some haiku!
Should I see the thread on the thread maintanance drop down list? Because I don't.
Nah, haven't hit submit yet.
eta: But now I have. It's just closed until the old one dies.
Ahh, OK. I was thinking you created it, but made it closed, and would open it when the old thread is done.
I edited, Jon. I just did what you suggested.
I'm thinking we might need to add "Bob likes carrots" to the FAQ. It's common currency and a useful meme. It's Teppy's coinage:
ND, the origin of Bob likes carrots is...um...me.
It's the phenomenon wherein someone is SO very into his/her sweetie/lover/Master/whatever that no matter what the conversation, no matter how unrelated it is to one's sweetie, you still mention him/her. For example.
Buffista 1: "I need to go to the farmer's market to get some veggies."
Buffista 2: "I have a good recipe for sauteed carrots if you want it."
Buffista 3: "Carrots? Bob likes carrots!"
Did we decide to keep phrases like "Cousin Klingon" in the FAQ? That never really crossed to the lexicon.
