Thanks, Daniel. I wouldn't mind a link to the AP/New York Times/Yahoo News article, but I don't need the full obituary reposted here.
Bureaucracy 2: Like Sartre, Only Longer
A thread to discuss naming threads, board policy, new thread suggestions, and anything else that has to do with board administration and maintenance. Guaranteed to include lively debate and polls. Natter discouraged, but not deleted.

Maybe I'm a little late to the lurking discussion here, but I figured I'd weigh in anyway. I've been reading almost daily since Buffy 2 on TT; about 3.5 years, but never posted (or even registered) until very recently. I guess there are a few reasons for that, one of them being my own realization that there is "lurker fear." Also, I think if I had started posting early on it would have been easier, but after a few months and then years, I felt that I knew all of you so well that being the new kid would be really weird. Strangely enough, I found Buffy through the Buffistas; I had only seen a few eps and then happened upon the Quotable thread. I read the whole thing in one afternoon and was so enchanted that I never missed an episode after that- "Doomed" was my first first-run episode, so it's lucky I stayed.
When I discovered that I could vote without posting, I was actually really happy. It made me feel like more of a member of the group. Even if I had never said a thing, I still think I was an "active member" since I read the board every day, and therefore, decisions about the board did affect me.
I wish that there was some other term for those of us who read but do not post. "Lurking" sounds so sinister, as though we are skulking around in the bushes while the rest of you have a party. Of course you have lurker fear!

That's one of the reasons I liked the Wim Wenders analogy way upthread--it makes the silent, listening presence of our infrequent or non posters seem like a positive aspect of the board. Unfortunately, I don't think that "angel" would be a good new term for "lurker," because of a) possible confusion with a certain hairloaf and b) high sap factor.
How about der Engel? Or a Cassiel? And a newly delurked person would be a Damiel?
No.
So did we ever decide on the new Firefly thread name? I'm still liking "Too damned pretty to die."
Still love "Still Flying" here.

I hear you, Sassy. I spent a year lurking on TT/WX, including 6 months on the Buffy threads (I went back to Thread 1 and caught up) before starting to post.
All I can suggest is, once you've lurked long enough to fit our style, it's surprisingly easy to join in. Buffistadom is flexible enough to accommodate just about any personal style, as long as you don't attack people. And we don't bite. Unless, of course, you want us to.
Okay, ran through the last thousand posts or so, and here are the potential new Firefly thread titles that appeared to have at least some support:
Firefly 3: I'll Be In My Bunk
Firefly 3: Still Flying
Firefly 3: Too Damned Pretty to Die

I still like Firefly 3: Morbid and Creepifying
