EM was going to facetime me from Montana to go over paperwork and then cancelled it at the last minute this morning! Rude! Now I have to go through my tax stuff by myself.

I need to wake Matilda up but then I'll have to feed her and shit. And I'm clearly having some motivation issues.

Okay, I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in hips. From the reading I've been doing, it almost sounds like recovery from a total hip replacement is easier than recovery from repairing a torn labrum. I genuinely don't know which one to hope for. (Obviously I would prefer no surgery, but the MRI results make it pretty clear that there's a significant amount of damage to the cartilage, so there's going to have to be some sort of surgery.) My age and the amount of damage kind of point towards total hip replacement, so I'm preparing myself mentally for that. Although it's 2026 and apparently a lot of hip replacements are done on an outpatient basis, so it's not the complicated procedure it used to be. Living in the future is awesome!

I am very annoyed I was supposed to have a package delivered by USPS yesterday. And then suddenly it changed from “out for delivery” to “you need to come pick it up at the downtown office that is only open 9-4”. wtf.

In my experience, people who go in for hip replacements have such a decrease in the joint pain that the recovering-from-surgery pain is not actually that bad (as opposed to the "I broke my hip" folks). And the post-surgical precautions are much more limited than 10 years ago so you don't have to deal with putting on pants without leaning forward, for example.

The pain itself isn't agonizing, but it has severely limited my activities, so some postsurgical pain that can be managed with ice and meds is a welcome tradeoff to being able to function in the world again.

I can only speak to the first part in that my 88-y.o. aunt and her 63-y.o. daughter both had super beautifully smooth recoveries from their replacements and are thuh-rilled with the pain-be-gone procedure. Having said that, you are younger than both, and I have no idea how long a hip replacement lasts. I'll be interested to hear what your doctor recommends.

My brother in law (who is mid 50s) is having his hip replaced tomorrow! My sister said so far the issue is that he wasn’t allowed his usual painkillers for two weeks pre surgery so he’s been hurting extra bad.

My package which yesterday said I needed to go to the downtown postal center to get it, today got delivered. About 15 minutes before I was going to drice down there. Whew, good timing! Confusing but a relief
