I am worried that I might be too old to get hired as a full time teacher (I'm 62). I have to finish my classes before I can even think of applying through this program, but it is a concern. I'm still going full steam ahead, but it's a worry. I love subbing and would do that forever, but the pay is low (10-12 dollars an hour) and there are no bennies. Our Obamacare coverage is starting January 1, but the deductible is so high that it has me worried.
Anyway, all the local markets are hiring, so I am applying for part time work as a cashier. It's a union job so has full benefits. I feel odd and kinda embarrassed about working at a supermarket, and I also feel bad about about feeling that way. There is a very cool local indie grocer right down the road I am applying to. if that doesn't work out, it's on to Krogers and Meijer.
And because it deserves its own post--Congrats, -t!!!!!!!!!!!!
Scrappy, first you have to consider your needs and there is nothing wrong with working for a conveniently located cool local grocer with benefits. Second, I would think that the need for teachers most places is such that your age shouldn't be a huge factor. Of course it could be my ancientness speaking, but I don't think 62 is considered all that old anymore.
Congrats minus-t!
sj, your owner stylist is taking limited appts just to retain people like you. So, no guilt there.
Gud, sorry it's stressy at work but on the plus side...they need you. That's the best circumstance to be job-hunting from. Still employed.
Congrats, -t!
Scrappy, I don't know that age is going to be a problem, but if you're within an hour or so of Detroit, you could be competing with teachers who've been laid off from the Detroit schools over the past 5+ years. Nothing wrong with working in a grocery store. Someone I did voter registration work with left the corporate world and ended up working in our cool, local coop. She said the reduction in stress was wonderful.
Calli is wise, Scrappy.
Thanks, y'all! It's an 11% raise, which is the biggest I've ever gotten anywhere, I'm pretty sure, so, yeah, pretty dang good.
Congrats -t
Fingers crossed for Scrappy and Gud.
Operation sell the car has started. I steam cleaned half the back seat and 2 of the floor mats. Vacuumed out 3/4 of it, and set off an odor elimination spray in it. Will let it sit over night and the hopefully get the rest of the interior cleaned out on tomorrow's lunch hour. Then a washing, gathering all the documents, take pictures and put up a listing.
Maybe I can gather documents tonight.
Scrappy, all for a union job! I was a cashier for a summer, I've had worse jobs—at least that one was easy to leave at home!
And Yay -t!!
Gud, if you have the stomach for it, job hunting is a good plan, just to see...I hate it and don't do it nearly as often as I should.
