Theo! I have the answer! The rector of my church is sending out daily reflections and a recent one had this:
It's called "Maundy" because of the new commandment (mandatum in Latin) that Jesus gives his disciples, which is to love one another.
Off-topic discussion. Wanna talk about corsets, duct tape, butt kicking, or physics? This is the place. Detailed discussion of any current-season TV must be whitefonted.

So, "love each other Thursday"? Huh.
I'm feeling good in that my brain weasels aren't saying I'm horrible and awful, but feeling bad in the "don't want to do anything or get out of bed" way. I definitely prefer the lazy over the horrid self-talk, but my inability to do even normal things like laundry (much less learn a new language/clean the house/do a project) is gnawing at me.
Yes, but maintain your distance. To that end, the Pope is not doing his customary foot washing. (My church usually offers it as an option ... which I have never taken them up on. ick)
We did foot washing in Sunday School when I was in high school, and honestly, it was pretty powerful.
And not just the smell!
I'm having trouble dealing with suddenly not having a plan at all.
This is difficult for me as well. Like meara, I am struggling with laundry which shouldn't be that complicated.
I'm sorry for the delays, JZ. They are so emotionally fraught.
Meara, the thing for me is that there is no right way to respond to a trauma like we're experiencing. The more we can just let ourselves do whatever it is that brings comfort (Stardew Valley!) the more we give ourselves the room to grieve and heal.

Paperwork got processed and we're planning on a funeral tomorrow.
Of course, I don't have black pants and no way to get them in time either.
I lost the post, but I think Consuela said she's concerned about Gud. I am, too.
Hi esse. I see you there. I am a little slow on the uptake. I must have seen a handful of posts from you, including your coming out, before I put the letters in your tagline together with your current board name.
What the hell is a Maundy, anyway?

From Merrriam-Webster:
History and Etymology for maundy
Middle English maunde, from Old French mandé, from Latin mandatum command, order; from the words spoken by Jesus to his disciples after washing their feet at the Last Supper, "a new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another" (John 13:34 Authorized Version)
So it's the mandate to love one another.

"Maundy" is the word for the foot-washing ceremony, which *is* a pretty big demonstration of love. When Jesus did it, he washed his disciples' feet, not the other way around.
Thank you for giving me something else to think about for two minutes, Buffistas.

Hec, it will just be the family, right? Don't worry about the pants.
Yeah I'm sure people get that shopping or dry cleaning is not happening now. Glad the funeral will still happen.
Esse I always when I see if written that way picture some cheesy fake-mexican gang parody thing where a guy in an alley is whispering "psst. Ese. You think you're too good for this gang?"
