I finally sat down and streamed quite a few episodes of The Magicians. I think through S2E4. All I can say for the moment is that it is excellent distraction.
I can't explain the sequence of events that have led to this, but I've been reading TONS of fanfic for The Magicians recently even though I've never watched it (though I did read the first 2 books). I think I need to watch it -- where is it streaming?

It's not a comedy, but I think it's the funniest show on TV.
Also the end of S4 is one of the saddest TV episodes I've seen lately.
The most recent ep of Magicians had me absolutely bawling.

There are 5 seasons? But I watched a couple of episodes of season 1 and drifted away meaning to get back to it and surely that was just a few months ago...
That was a typo, I meant the end of S4. Season 5 just started a couple of weeks ago.

There are certainly a number of comedic characters. I'm further behind than you, but Eliot, the Dean, and the Antarctica dude are particularly amusing to me.

I thought they managed it very well. The ep itself was moving, and honestly I think it'll improve the show going forward.
